Dummies guide to ROMS and Rooting?

I have a vanilla Hero, and would very much like to install the Modaco ROM on it, but I have NO idea how. :D

I've looked at the forum guide, but I got seriously lost. :)

If there's anyone who could help me I'd really appreciate it, I feel like there's so much more I can do with my phone. :D
