Start Modding My Omnia, The Great Questions

Recommended Posts

Posted (edited)

Hi All,

I want to upgrade/modify my omnia, but I have several doubts and I'd appreciate very much if you would spend some of your time to help me about answering these newbie questions:

1) What is the relation between the Firmware and the ROM? Do I need to upgrade the firmware before to upload a new ROM?

2) I have a DXGH3 Omnia, so it should be a Philippine ROM as fas as I got, is the latest compatible version available the DXHJ1?

3) I think I need the fastest, cleanest, most stable and essential ROM to install just what I need, do you think it's a good idea or you already know that a definitive ROM exist so I don't need to worry to anything else that just upload it? I'm looking for the latest stable wm version.

4) I need the most responsive UI available, it looks like many suggest to install SPB Mobile Shell, do you confirm?

5) Do I need tools to keep my omnia clean and efficient?

I want to squeeze all the omnia power, please help me do that, thank you very much!

1) the firmware has got NOTHING to do with the ROM. ROM flashing is different.

2) The latest is DXID1

3) Yes everyone needs the fastest, cleanest and most stable ROM :D unforunately windows 6.5 was NOT released for the Omnia so it's hard to get a bug free build. But new branches have come out and they are much better. Also look in the ROM section! there are so many ROMs! i recommend Sectors ROM's and Ryrzys.

4) SPB Shell does not reveal Omnias true potential at all. You need M2D (manilla2D) and that is the best UI for the Omnia

5) Custom ROMs come pre-configured to keep your omnia fast, efficient and clean. Apps are also included like RAM cleaner.

thanks for your answers!

- So first of all I assume I have to upgrade the firmware, I should find then this version DXID1

- I should find a Windows Mobile 6.5 Rom that supports Manilla2D. Does it support kinetic scrolling too? Is it something that I should definitively have (The kinetic scrolling I mean)?

- There are way too many roms out there, will I go for the ones you suggest?

Thank you very much

P.S.: do you know a widget to see on the screen my telephone number? :D

what do you think about FtouchSL? It's something I should have together with m2d?

Hi guys,

I still need your help!

I'm days I'm reading and reading your posts, but still I have problems to figure out what I should do.

I've downloaded an image of a presumed DXID1 image rom (it's 16.5 mb big).

I've got a job done, but I restarted my phone and it looks like everything is the same.

The version of the phone is the old one.

Help? What should I do?

I actually was wrong, I checked better and now I have 2 different versions, one for the PDA and one for the Phone.

Now I got why you call it "phone part" and indeed it's been updated.

I'd like to know what the difference should be though, thanks

don't touch FtouchSL, it will make your phone unusable. Only chefs know how to integrate it into the ROMs so dw about it

the phone part is different to the ROM, nothing changes except for maybe signal strength and wifi strength, it just makes the phone more efficient (connection wise)

Are you trying to create your own ROM? you'll need to look at Vistangs Visual Kitchen thread to get started, or you can simply download a cooked ROM that our chefs have made. the latest build is 28002 and many chefs have cooked some new ROMs up. Check out Nicklashidegards ROM thread here: http://www.modaco.com/content/i900-general...te-roms-hide13/

thank you very much. I'd like to create a rom, but I know too little and I don't think I can have the time to do that.

It's already so time consuming trying to understand all this stuff.

Anyway my rom would be completely empty (just s.o.) I don't see the point to pre-install software.

An empty rom would be perfect for everybody I presume, since it's the most customizable and stable and clean :)

Wait.... FTouchSL don't make your phone "unusable". Is a must for a lot of people, including me, and I install it with ANY ROM I flash my Omnia (and I flash every 3 or 4 days) and NEVER, EVER had any problems.

About the UI (Manila, Titanium, SPB Mobile Shell 3.5) is all about taste. I prefer SPB Mobile Shell because I think is the best. Manila is very good, but not as good for me as SPB MS3.5, also consumes a lot more RAM. Titanium (with its variants, Neo, Classic) is a UI that a lot of people like because is light and fast. But SPB MS3 is the way to go for me.

About the ROMs, as I said, right now I prefer Mr. Hammer's, because they are very stable and use less RAM than any other. But that's a matter of taste too.

I tried manila...and I agree spb shell is better. I'm going to upload a new rom without any UI so I can install spb shell. spb shell feels faster and more responsive. I'd like to try this titanium though.

After some test I have to say that Ryrzy lite version plus spb shell works for me :)

thanks!
