need help asap!!

hi people im new to this all please help!!

i have just recently received my htc hero on t-mobile and i was told to go to the t-mobile site to download the latest upgrade stock rom so i did and upgraded my rom,

i then was reading about the htc hero and the cool things u can do with it. i want to root my phone and install a custom rom from this site by paul but because i have upgraded using the t-mobile upgrade i cannot root my phone please someone help and tell me what i need to do??

i preferably do not want to wipe my phone as i have apps on ther that i have downloaded and paid for??

what should i do?? i am a noob so please explain
