Android Marketplace downloads REALLY slow? (any clues?)

Ok, I have MoDaCo 2.8 (no real need to move to 2.9 that I can see yet!) and Teknologist's 1.8 kernel, and the JU radio.

Browsing the internet & marketplace is ueber quick, all is good, but DOWNLOADING (either on 3G/HSDPA OR WiFi) is really screwed - it just sits on "starting download" for minutes, then suddenly leaps into life and works.

Anyone have any ideas on how to rectify this? It's only been doing it for a few days, and I've had 2.8 installed for a coupla weeks.

Update...

I tried wiping app caches/data, did nothing. So I did a nandroid restore (to the point before I installed Tek 1.8 kernel) and reinstalled the 1.8 kernel, and it's happy.... ?!

Something obviously got munged/refreshed somewhere...
