HTC Hero - Shows incorrect location

Hi all,

I've got a bit of a problem with my Hero and was hoping somebody has got an idea how to solve it.

Simply put, when the phone is showing "3G" the location on the clock widget is correct as is the weather widget and in google maps I see a big blue circle around a nearby location (I assume it is a cellphone mast).

However, if the phone is showing "E" then the location is totally wrong - it shows as in one of three other countries (always the same ones, but random which) and in one case "helpfully" changes timezone by 3 hours...

From the display in google maps it seems to be basing location from cellphone towers (it shows as a blue circle round a fixed point). I gather this works by comparing the tower ID to some kind of database, but I cannot find any way to get the phone to tell me what tower ID I'm actually connected to.

I've had a look for an app to show this information and other than some partial sourcecode which apparently doesn't work in android 1.5 anyway I've drawn a blank. Of course I am just assuming this is what is going on and I might be missing something important...

Obviously I contacted my cellphone provider but they are pretty useless and claim to not be sending out any location information at all. I don't believe that is the case because it is fine when on 3G. I've also checked the IP address the phone is on but it seems the same one no matter what type of connection (I've not got any proxy set either).

I've tried updating to the newest HTC supplied rom and have also updated the radio to the latest available here (63.18.55.06JU_6.35.08.29 at this time). I also have root access if there is something I can run to assist with identifying what is going on.

Help!

It seems cellfinder is an app that shows information on celltowers - not sure why I didn't manage to find it when I last searched for such an app.

I will note down the details and attempt to work out if it is a database issue or if my provider are sending the wrong ID...
