Roms, radios and partitions....?!? Questions over Questions

Hello,

i am totally new here and hope you are able to help me with my HTC Hero and that you can understand me,in fact that i am from Germany.

A few weeks ago i bought a brandnew HTC Hero over the eplus store, which is ( i hope so) unbranded? and has no sim lock,... ( i use it with an o2 sim card ).

I was totally confident with this great phone, but then i discovered the possibillity to put a new firmware on it: the modaco custom rom.

After some research on the internet I decided to try to update it, and, finally, it worked ( I used a method with youtube videos, because the thing with "adb" did not work...).

I think I started with modaco 2.2, now, I am at 2.9 and during I write this text here I upgrade my radio to the new "xxxJU_xxx" ( I hope that everything will still work...^^)

My phone is in fact not faster than before and the battery does not run longer, but I feel happy that I have a "pimped" HTC Hero.

So,

this was my introduction ( I hope I did not break any forum rules or severeal stuff, in fact of that I am totally new here...?!)

As I looked here in this site I found threats like: participate(?) your hero with ext2 and fat32, upgrade to the new kernel version 2.73,.... .

Now I feel a bit helpless if I configurated my phone as I should or if I did a mistake.

And the second point is that I heard from Android 1.5/1.6 and then 2.0 (Eclair and donut,..)

I think I have 1.5, but is there a upgrade to 1.6 or 2.0 for me too, and if yes, when comes it out..?

I hope you can help and say me if I did everything right or not....

I made a screenshot from my phone informations where you can see what I have and what not.

For summarisation:

-HTC Hero (the white one)

-micro sdhc 8gb class 4 ( I think toshiba but not sure )

-android 1.5

-modaco 2.9

-radio JU

-and no idea...^^

You have 2.9 which includes the Tek 1.8 kernel, so that looks ok, as well as the JU radio.

Only thing we can't tell is how (or if) you've partitioned your SD card, but you should be ok with what you have there.

I'm on 2.8 with Tek 1.9 and a partitioned 8GB Class 6 SD card and it's nipping along fairly nicely.

Android 2.0 (or 2.1, judging by some screenshots) should be along soon...(HTC will have to recompile all their stuff for it, ensure an upgrade path hopefully, then release source so Paul/Tek can tweak it!)

You're pretty much completely up to date, don't worry.

ANDROID:

1.5 is the only version of Android available for Hero, there's either 2.0 or 2.1 coming though.

PARTITIONS.

Your microSD card can be partitioned to enable applications to be installed there instead of to your phone's internal memory. If you are running out of room (probably not, there's lots of space on the phone) you can create an EXT (Linux) partition on your card. It's not at all necessary but if you decide to do it then a programme like Paragon Partition Manager can do it for you, or even some recovery images have the option to do it for you (RA-Hero-v1.3.2 does). Once you've done this, restart your phone and it will copy the files across while starting up. This may take a lot longer than a usual boot. From then on, install any apps as usual, they'll be transferred at the next boot.

You do not need a Swap partition.

RADIOS.

You have the latest version, as far as I know.

ROMS

Modaco 2.9 is the latest version at time of writing. The Kernal version you have (came as part of Modaco 2.9) has been superseded and you can get Teknologist 1.9, which fixes Wi-Fi tether issues.

Basically, you did everything right, there's no need to do anything right now. New ROMS are coming.

Okay, I think some stuff is much clearer than before.

But I have still some questions left:

1. I have ASTRO File Manager on my phone, and when I go to the Process Explorer I can see a lot of apps runing in the background I do not need like app installer or footprints,.... Can I disable the ones I do not need?

2. I have a class4 card without any partition on it ( or just one ^^ ) Is my phone faster oder something else after I partitioned it?

3. As you can see i have the Kernel Version 2.67.xxx

I found on the HTC Webiste an update for my cell phone with the number 2.73. Why I do not have the acutell kernel version and are there any improvements when I have the new one...?

4. What is a dropbear ssh server?

5. Is there any improvement from Tek 1.8 to 1.9 and how can I update ?

1. you can, if you want to kill them use a task manager of your choice, if you want to prevent them from starting either use "autostarts" (paid app) from the market or remove them from your phone, see first post of the mcr2.9 thread.

2. usually neither faster nor slower, but you have more space for apps.

3. 2.6.27 is the (linux) kernel version, 2.73.xxx.xx the rom version. these two are independent, at this time 2.6.27 is the only kernel version available for the hero.

4. an ssh server that can be compiled for arm/android. if you don't know what ssh is you won't need it, if you want to know ask google.

5. the changes aswell as installation instructions can be found in the thread and/or tek's website, which is also the place to download it.

Don't want to steal your thread, but I kind of am on the same place as you... weel, located in Santiago, Chile though ;-)

First of all, how do I take a screenshot with my Hero??

I've done everything that is recommended here on this forum. Lastest ROM, Kernel, and Radio, fast sd partitioned card, swap partition, etc... and my phone seems slow... the touching of the screen seem really slow...

What should I check?? Size of the partitions?? What....? I'm a little lost.....

I'd appreciate your input too!

HI, how do I disable or remove the SHH ??

BECAUSE i purchased a phone with modaco 3.1 rom installed and it has SSH....but i want to remove it because the previous user can log in and check my private things is that correct????
