Guest Paul Posted December 1, 2009 Report Posted December 1, 2009 I've been thinking about next / future MCR now that we have working custom kernels and a near generic update, and i've decided the future is bright. My thoughts... - stick with cupcake until a U8xxx ROM with a later version appears - rebuild the kernel to include swap, compcache, ext4, iptables etc as per the Hero MCR kernel - use the 8230 ROM as the base, using primarily Vanilla Android - include additional stuff like block breaker, but put in the data partition to allow uninstall - include both launchers (standard and Pulse style) and let the user choose on first boot Seems a sound plan no? :D Love that we have the Pulse so 'hackable' now! P
Guest phucte Posted December 1, 2009 Report Posted December 1, 2009 (edited) I would like to just see a "clean rom" without block breaker or dare I say it the pulse launcher.... I just think that all of the extra t mobile stuff just slows it down and makes it less smooth. I think that you should do an add on pack like you did with "WaveSecure" Edited December 1, 2009 by phucte
Guest klutsh Posted December 1, 2009 Report Posted December 1, 2009 (edited) What's the difficulty with going to a stock 1.6 ROM? I know it's a jump though given the G1 is running 1.6 does it not make sense? If it is not a good idea fair enough. Edited December 1, 2009 by klutsh
Guest phucte Posted December 1, 2009 Report Posted December 1, 2009 (edited) What's the difficulty with going to a stock 1.6 ROM? I would skip 1.6 and go straight to 2.0 or even port cyanogenmod :D It would be nice if you could get 2.0 before huawei get around to it, even though it's more effort but the kernel is the important thing.. Guest xarxiusxiii Posted December 1, 2009 Report Posted December 1, 2009 Sounds excellent! Definite thumbs up from me! :D
Guest helikopter Posted December 1, 2009 Report Posted December 1, 2009 all sounds great except one thing: i don't think that many of us would like to see any t-mobile stuff on our devices. :D
Guest niko1986 Posted December 1, 2009 Report Posted December 1, 2009 It would be nice if you could get 2.0 before huawei get around to it, even though it's more effort 2.0 would be fantasic for things like the new google maps navigation, with a few changes so it works for the UK ;p But just take ur time :D ... well not too much!
Guest geHuC Posted December 1, 2009 Report Posted December 1, 2009 Can we still have the ''canvas'' home screen ? I kind of like it :D
Guest Evil Kaz Posted December 2, 2009 Report Posted December 2, 2009 (edited) - include both launchers (standard and Pulse style) and let the user choose on first boot Sorry, im new to Android but what are the launchers? But yea, much prefer a clean minimal ROM as possible. Edited December 2, 2009 by Evil Kaz
Guest bas-r Posted December 2, 2009 Report Posted December 2, 2009 (edited) Staying with cupcake sounds sensible, timewise. Being able to deinstall things like servosearch and googletalk would be great. Or an 'adb' tutorial would be handy as well ;-) EDIT, @ davos1: thanks mate! Edited December 2, 2009 by bas-r
Guest davos1 Posted December 2, 2009 Report Posted December 2, 2009 Tutorial on how to uninstall stuff: *Make sure you have Quick Boot and root access** 1. Reboot the phone in recovery mode using Quick Boot 2. Connect your Pulse to the computer 3. Open up a cmd window and "cd" to the folder with adb installed 4. Type in "adb shell" 5. Write "mount -o rw /dev/block/mtdblock1 /system" 6. Write "cd /system/app" 7. Write "ls" 8. Now, write in "rm [name of app to delete]" to uninstall the app. Eg. "rm TouchPal.apk" 9. Do this for as many apps as you need to 10. Write in "reboot" to reboot your phone

Guest kristijan_mk Posted December 2, 2009 Report Posted December 2, 2009 I must say that I'm extremely happy to see that Pulse is becoming easy hacking device. I'm sure that it will add much value to my beloved phone :D As a total noob for Android and Linux, I wouldn't comment on what to add or exclude from the ROM. From what I saw on this forum I'm sure you'll do a good job :( Anyway I have one request. Can somebody make a tutorial for installing custom kernel or ROM, but written for 5 year olds ;) . I know that browsing through the posts I can find everything, but written tutorial (for dummies) will be much helpful and for sure will increase the customer base I knew that all that mocking that I did to Linux people will eventually backfire to me :D
Guest Jan M Posted December 2, 2009 Report Posted December 2, 2009 2.0 would be fantasic for things like the new google maps navigation, with a few changes so it works for the UK ;p looks like 1.6 is actually required for non-US google maps navigation: http://www.electricpig.co.uk/2009/11/30/go...w-our-tutorial/

P If possible can you keep the build with out T-Mobile stuff (as lean and fast as possible) and have they as additional packs like you have done for wavesecure ect. Thanks!
Guest Jan M Posted December 5, 2009 Report Posted December 5, 2009 - include additional stuff like block breaker, but put in the data partition to allow uninstall can't applications in the /system/app partition be simply removed after an 'adb remount'?
Guest mikeyxb Posted December 5, 2009 Report Posted December 5, 2009 i think its a great idea, and deffinatley should wait for 2.0, and just an idea but would there be any way to implement debian shell on the rom also some sort of xwindow like icevm, i know its a long shot but was just an idea ???

Have the 8230 sources been published? I suspect they are virtually at par with the 8220, but the more info the better.
Guest _melchett Posted December 5, 2009 Report Posted December 5, 2009 i was a little concerned that my pulse would be stuck on 1.5, but this thread is giving me alot of hope. Great work Paul et al
Guest Timmmm Posted December 7, 2009 Report Posted December 7, 2009 I think 1.6 is possible quite easily. It is likely that we can use the same kernel. However 2.0 would be much more tricky. I'm not sure Google have even released the source code for the 2.0 kernel yet.

Guest Bigsy Posted December 7, 2009 Report Posted December 7, 2009 I don't see anything in 2.0 that I really want/need, but having Google navigation in 1.6 would be a massive plus for me and I guess many others.
