"new" i910 freezes when browsing on wifi

I picked up a "new" Verizon i910 on ebay to use with Page Plus Celluar (Verizon reseller). Just got it in the mail yesterday and apparently this was a replacement Verizon sent the seller, so I'm not positive it is "new". (Came to him in a white box).

I've had lots of Windows Mobile PDA experience, but this thing is driving me nuts. I've not switched over my cell yet just to make sure it worked. It does fine in snagging email, but when I try to browse, it will often just hang. Occasionally it will even crash with the "We're sorry" message at the top status bar and a white screen below. I have to reset to do anything after that. I've checked and it appears to have the latest Verizon Rom i910.1.0V.CF03.20961 (under "version info"). Anywhere else I should check?

I just tried shutting off the Samsung today screen app, did a soft reset, but it didn't help. I also have done a hard reset too. The thing didn't ship with a USB cable so I've got one on order, but I thought about trying the official ROM again. Should I consider one of the created ones here?

Any tips to help a newb in this area? This is my first smartphone (other was just a Moto e815), but I've been pretty disappointed so far. Can you help? Thanks!
