Rooting and Flashing a G2 Touch. Where to begin?

Hi guys,

I've just received my t-mobile G2 touch and I'm getting a bit confused on what I need to do with regards to rooting and flashing.

I understand that I need to do a backup first but after that I'm lost.

Is it possible to root the latest T-Mobile firmware for the G2 touch that has been released? Or do I have to root first then upgrade to a Modaco ROM if I wish to keep the root access?

I've flashed devices before, the Tocco, PSP etc. but I'm completely lost with the amount of guides out there for the Hero/G2 Touch and am not sure which will work with my model.

Firmware version = 1.5

Build Number = 1.76.110.6

Any help would be appreciated.

Cheers :D

If you intend to use MCR don't upgrade to the new T mobile firmware because then it is a ball ache to get back, as you have to use the gold card method. Install custom recovery image and then you can flash anything you want in update.zip format.

Read the stickys at the top of the the forum, they tell you everything you need to know - theres alot of info - but no pain no gain.

good place to start:

I installed the custom Modaco rom but I couldn't get past the HTC screen, so I downloaded the rooted t-mobile rom provided in the sticky. Will it be as hard to get back to custom roms as with the standard t-mobile update?

Okay on the Custom Rom sticky it says anyone on the stock 2.73.xx updates doesn't need to wipe?

I'm on the t-mobile 2.73 rooted rom downloaded from the forums. How do I go about installing the custom rom from this stage?

Also how are the radios installed? Is it in the same process as the rom update?

First of all, hi everyone and back again after very very long time. Once upon a time I used to ask about winMO :( . After countless sleepless nights, moved to Nokia and Symbian. In last 18 months, so bored with limited options on N series and only good thing about camera, always keeping eyes over on Modaco, here again for headache :D.

Got Hero this afternoon and first thing first, never ever going back to WinMo or Symbian- Very Impressed. Anyway, for past 4 days reading everywhere on net and even watching videos. Still getting no clue. Downloaded Modaco custom rom 3.0 and custom recovery image and almost thought I'm ready. Out of nowhere heard about this "goldcard" thing and seeing super long process, my heart sank. Then over in XDA http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=559613 which seems a different method. Now I'm very confused and like OP don't know where to begin.

HTC hero

network :Orange UK

Build: 2.73.64.5 146733 CL#61267 release-keys

Kernel : 2.6.27-8dd6deee

Firmware : 1.5

Software : 1.0.0.A6288

Appreciate for all help and sorry for hijacking the thread. Thought we both are on same boat ;)

Oh also a quick guide on SD card partition would be helpful.

I had a similar phone on Orange (Build number: 2.73.61.5) and I used the gold card method to downgrade, before following the flash rec guide you linked to.

It's possible that you don't need to use the gold card method but I don't know for certain. I would guess that you can try the flash rec method and it should just fail if it can't be done on that build, but I strongly recommend you get advice from an expert before you try.

Finally done!!!.

A big curious look and questions from my other half seeing me on comp all day, few problems en-route especially in hex editor's physical disks and RA-hero1.5.1 which still unable so currently on 1.2.3, here I'm with Modaco MCR3.0 ;).

oh one thing more, on first boot damn it took a helluva of time, nearly thought i bricked as was looping on boot HTC thing. I needed to take out my SD card and was fine. Then when updating Radio, would just goes back to AraMON screen and clearing cache..... thing .Again took out SDCARD and was fine.

Will try to do properly sometime later. ;)

How long did you have to wait on first boot. I was looping the htc/hero logo for about 15 minutes before I called it quits and installed the rooted t-mobile firmware.

Again does anyone know if I need to use the goldcard method to change firmware to the custom modaco rom? Also would I have to wipe? Manually adding facebook links for contacts can become a pain lol.

Just went ahead with the install and it went fine. Took out the sd card as Starfarer did and it actually booted this time. Kept all my settings and data as well. ;)

Glad it worked for you too ;). Probably to do with the SD card partition or something.

Actually it never did, was looping round and round on HTC logo. Ran out of patient, took out SD card, restarted and voila!
