Total Newbie - sorry

I know this will seem really daft and quite annoying for everyone but.....I really dont know what rooting and updating the rom does!

Can someone tell me why I would want to to do these things, everyone seems to think the results are worth it but what does it all do? How does it improve the phone? (I currently have build 1.76)

Also, does anyone know how I can use my phone at work through a wi fi - proxy server set up. I imagine this proxy server business must have been covered somewhere as so many businesses run proxy servers etc- but I just cant find any settings on the phone that do it. ( My wi fi constantly drops off - is this just me?)

Yes, that is the rom for GSM HTC Hero.

in my opinion its better than the stock roms. but i guess its down to personal choice. ;)

basically, install recovery image http://android.modaco.com/content/htc-hero...on-your-device/

download rom of your choice, place on sdcard, and rename as update.zip.

boot in to recovery ( power off, and hold power and home key till recovery comes up)

do nandrom backup.

install image.

job done.

dont i need to root my phone?

and i want to get a t mobile g2 which i belive is just a tmobile hero, can i just install hero's rom on it? can i do that straight away or do i need to update something first before i install hero on?

Yes, you will need to root the device.

and i believe it is the same phone. i have the HTC Hero, and looking at the box, it says Tmobile G2.

i didnt root mine before installing custom boot image.
