Restoring Pulse to original software

Once you have installed the recovery image, superboot and the MoDaCo custom ROM, is it possible to get the phone back to original condition (e.g. so you could take it back to the shop, or so you could get a software update automatically from T-Mobile)?

If so, how?

Software updates aren't being deployed automatically by T-Mobile AFAIK, and if they were, there's nothing in the custom ROM that'd stop you getting them.

Stock ROM is in the main MCR post.

I understand there is a T-Mobile update for the ShopSavvy problem (camera interface).

I also remember reading somewhere that one of the updates automatically refuses ROM updates from T-Mobile - can't find the reference now, though :-(

There aren't any new updates on the support site :/

I have not heard of an update regarding this, but when I received my phone I installed a tool called

Barcode Scanner and this did not function. It was like it could not focus (if you hear closely you

hear an focusmotor running in the device). But after I think MCR 1.1 the tool suddenly worked

for me. Shopsavvy also works (I think they use the same library for scanning).

At times it also stopped working correctly, each time reverting back to focussing problems (you

see the image getting sharper and out of focus again). Most of the times after a reboot it starts

working again. Some people have found that aiming to a bright light first helps.

Personally I think there is a software problem and not a hardware problem. Maybe the problems

stem from the situation that the camera is totally crap anyway. I am used to HTC devices,

and Huawei have managed to make an even worse camera for the Pulse. For me personally

not a problem, for photo's I have a DSLR camera.

As I am writing this I was wondering whether the lens in the backcover has something to do with it.

I tried shopsavvy without the backcover and it seems to focus quicker. Could you try it

without the backcover? Maybe the lens is a bit dirty?

If the barcode scanner only displays a blank screen with a red line - I believe that is due to a software bug in the /system/lib/libcamera.so module. You can fix it by replacing that file with a working one (you can find a working one in the U8230 ROM update.zip). An even better option is to install a whole new ROM, such as the MoDaCo Custom U8230 ROM. The camera itself should be fine.

I'm not aware of any T-Mobile software updates to fix it, but theoretically they could produce one.

The new MCR 1.4 is based on the 'November update', which may fix it, else the U8230 ROM definitely resolves it for everyone I believe!

Yeah shopsavvy and other barcode apps now work after moving to the U8230 based rom, one thing to note when scanning a code you get more success holding it at a distance say 30cm, otherwise the camera just loops attempting to refocus.

Before flashing the new 8230 ROM, I had the problem where the camera stayed all black.

Since flashing it, I have the problem where the camera keeps trying to focus, but never scans a barcode.

I have tried from various distances, from 2 cm up to 50 cm (and others in between).

I have tried with the back cover removed.

I have tried rebooting.

None work :-(

I had exact same problem the slightest movement resets the focus, but the latest update to shop savvy seems to compensate ALOT, only came out today; i think, and so much less refocussing which makes me think this is a software issue.

Issues may be due to slightly different hardware cameras used in the pulse? And the software works best with certain cameras?

thats why i keep the dload folder from tmobile support site on memory card all the time so if anything ever goes wrong i can always go back to the original

Well, I just updated ShopSavvy, and tried again (with and without the lens, and from various distances) - no better.

Try a magazine bar-code, some of the bar-codes I've tried work, some don't. It may just be the coding they use.

Eventually got it to work - I removed the back cover, propped a book up on the table, and rested the phone on the table pointing at the book for about a minute. Not, perhaps, the most efficient input method in the world (I could have typed the code in through the on-screen keyboard in about half the time). Then it found the book on Amazon, but it took nearly 2 minutes to load the page (the phone is connected via a wifi router about 4 feet away).

Is it the app that's rubbish, or the phone (or both)?
