Guest kbrothers Posted December 12, 2009 Report Posted December 12, 2009 Other than the problem I'm having with my incoming calls going straight to voice mail (which I posted about in the Beginners forum), I love my Hero, which I've had for a week. I've seen all the posts about updating this and that, but I'm unsure how to go about doing so. If someone could give me a step by step walk through, I would be eternally grateful. If necessary, I can give you my yahoo messenger ID, so we can do it one on one when we both have the time.
Guest hp1 Posted December 12, 2009 Report Posted December 12, 2009 You probably need to be a bit more specific about what you'd like to update. If you mean a ROM and Radio then the stickies at the top of the forum would be worth a read for a start.

I don't understand any of it... LOL
Guest clarkEEE1 Posted December 12, 2009 Report Posted December 12, 2009 There's differant ways to root depending on your hboot we need more info about your phone to point you the right direction. Root gives you full access to phone data and system dir. If I were you id start to read the stickys at the top of the forum all the info is there and you will understand it more.

Guest kbrothers Posted December 13, 2009 Report Posted December 13, 2009 http://lmgtfy.com/?q=how+to+root+htc+hero Well, I tried following along to one of the videos, but I can't seem to make my way to the directory I downloaded the SDK into (I put it in My Doucuments, then in a folder named Android), from the command prompt. Like I said, I need a step by step walk through, with exactly what I need to type, etc... hence the reason I didn't do a Google search in the first place. I am NOT computer illiterate, I just don't venture into DOS or whatever it is I need to be in to do this.

What information do you need? I have the HTC Hero and my carrier is Sprint... that's all I know... LOL.
Guest clarkEEE1 Posted December 13, 2009 Report Posted December 13, 2009 What you got there is the cdma hero at the top of the page there's (CDMA)modaco 1.1 custom Rom sticky read that there's a guide on the first page should help you.

The videos on theunlockr.com with the full step-by-step instructions are about as explanatory as it gets. If you can't use a command window to change into a folder to get to the adb utility, then you might want to sort out the issues with your system before trying to mod the phone.

It's not that I can't, it's that I don't know how. Like I said, I've never used the command window before. I tried typing in what I thought was the proper directory, but it didn't work, so I think I'm doing it wrong.

Thank you. Knowing which of the sticky threads I needed really helps. I do have one question though... it says something about a recovery image, but I don't see where to download it from.
Guest sambartle Posted December 13, 2009 Report Posted December 13, 2009 I've flashed my device (because I have a bit of a flashing addiction - and came from WinMo devices to android only last week) but I have to say with Android theres actually very few reasons for flashing the phone just because you can.. The advantages over the stock firmware are not as huge as they are on other platforms. (partially because the base OS is just better to start with) If you dont know what rooting is and why you want to do it then my advice would actually be to not bother.. unless you are having a problem with the phone?

Thanks for your input, Sam. I was wondering if there was really any advantage to doing so, but everyone here made it sound like there was, so I wanted to try it. Maybe I will just leave things as they are, for now, at least.
