Guest magneticflip Posted December 13, 2009 Report Posted December 13, 2009 Hello there, Just got my new Pulse and am very disappointed with the camera - the autofocus doesn't seem to work at all and I know others have had problems with this with their phones too. It does click, but it seems to make no difference to the quality of the picture. Has anyone experienced anything similiar. I've had it unlocked so I don't really want to swap it as I'll lose the unlocked phone presumably. Thanks!

I thought my LG cookie camera was the worst id ever used - until I got the Pulse ! However, the rest of the phone is great so I guess its a case of how important the camera is to you !

Thanks! how do you mean that the autofocus doesn't work? does if try to focus on objects before taking a picture? there may be an option somewhere to turn autofocus on/off, check it if you've turned it on. it's true that the picture quality is not the best to say the least, but autofocus works fine and nobody ever complained about it here on modaco.

It tries to focus on objects, but fails. Close up there doesn't seem to be a problem, but far away it just cannot latch onto any objects at all. I'll take an example and upload it in a bit.

This may be worth checking as this happened on one of my two Pulses. Take the back cover off and have a look at the clear plastic circle in the battery cover that the camera looks through. On one of mine there was a clear plastic tag which was covering the opening. I had to push out the clear plastic bit from the battery cover and then remove this small plastic tab. I then refitted the clear plastic and then the battery cover back on the phone. It was fine after that. The other phone I bought didn't have this. Not the best camera in the world but ok.

But I can't see any clear plastic tabs, just a black ring on the inside of the battery cover..

Was worth checking though. Also, TMobile have issued a software upgrade today. May be worth updating your phone with this to see if it works any better.
Guest Harash! Posted January 14, 2010 Report Posted January 14, 2010 (edited) Has anyone tried taking the phone to the service center regarding the autofocus issue? If so, did they fix it? My autofocus also looks like it isn't working at all, but the problem is that the service center for Huawei (and HTC) phones in Zagreb is full of BS. Should I rather take the phone to T-Mobile shop so that they send it to the service center? P.S. take a look at these stunning photos from CHT8000 (Taiwanese version of Pulse) http://www.flickr.com/photos/mobilegear/42...57623092193546/ After looking at that pictures, do you still think your camera works properly? I think not! Edited January 14, 2010 by Harash!
Guest bindi Posted January 15, 2010 Report Posted January 15, 2010 (edited) I can scan the barcode using shopsavvy or barcode scanner if I am really really lucky and patient with the phone. Obviously camera is not the strong point of this phone. Edited January 15, 2010 by bindi
Guest twe Posted January 15, 2010 Report Posted January 15, 2010 There are also 2 different camera modules I think I read somewhere.... Anyway my older Pulse seems to be worse than the newer one in terms of everything [white balance, picture quality, iso, focus]... Also there is a slight difference between the two physically.... The old one has 8 notches in the plastic around the lens, the newer one has 4 notches, almost square..... Can take a picture tonight if you don't know what I mean.
Guest Harash! Posted January 15, 2010 Report Posted January 15, 2010 Interesting, I bought mine the first week it was available (in Croatia tho, 20.November) , and it has got 4 notches (square-ish just like you said) camera module. I'm seriously thinking of taking it to service center, hoping they would change old camera module with the one from new Pulse, with excuse that my autofocus isn't working (and it isn't).
Guest twe Posted January 15, 2010 Report Posted January 15, 2010 The 4 nothces one is the newer one! Will post pics tonight - And the comparable quality between them.
Guest Harash! Posted January 15, 2010 Report Posted January 15, 2010 I saw what you wrote, but I just can't believe that's the newer camera. I mean, the pictures from my Pulse are pretty unfocused and blurry, and I'm not talking about ones taken with shaking hand. Hell, they look like like they were interpolated (stretched) from 2 megapixels to 3 megapixels. :/ But I would appreciate the samples from your Pulses. :)
Guest twe Posted January 15, 2010 Report Posted January 15, 2010 (edited) OLDER VERSION - NOTICE THE 8 NOTCHES IN THE PLASTIC AROUND THE LENS - Bought at full price at £176 approx 3 weeks after release Picture One, indoors, daytime, poor lighting due to early morning UK [yes I know the border is wrong way round but it's too late!] http://img63.imageshack.us/img63/1598/old1w.jpg Picture Two, indoors, night time, pointing at a side light with a yellow energy saving bulb in there http://img42.imageshack.us/img42/3596/old2z.jpg NEWER VERSION - NOTICE THE 4 NOTCHES IN THE PLASTIC AROUND THE LENS - Bought during the £92 one day offer so December 09 Picture One http://img63.imageshack.us/img63/5474/new1vg.jpg Picture Two http://img23.imageshack.us/img23/6882/new2iw.jpg Note I took 2 pictures of the same thing and uploaded the better one although lets be honest both are not great. Have used the same settings for both [white balance automax resolution]. I think the newer one takes sharper images And for reference of Picture Two I took the same shot with a point and shoot camera with all settings on auto [yes that struggled with white balance when set to auto] http://img16.imageshack.us/img16/2693/pointnshoot1.jpg Hope this helps in some way. Guest Harash! Posted January 15, 2010 Report Posted January 15, 2010 (edited) Thank you very much for these pictures! Well, now I do know for sure that I've got the newer Pulse, but I'm afraid pictures from my Pulse are comparable to the ones of your older Pulse, I think I can now definitely know there's something wrong with my camera module. :/ Take a look how blurry my pictures are: You'll see that upper-right and lower part of this document are less blurry than the middle, which is totally unreadable. Mouse and speaker in the middle are pretty blurry, but the wires that are closest to me, and that far away jack in left seem to be focused quite well. :S Yep, I got a defective camera. P.S. I think New and old Pulse can be recognized from that code printed on Antenna, my also says SAA 090908 Edited January 16, 2010 by Harash!
Guest twe Posted January 16, 2010 Report Posted January 16, 2010 am on phone right now so will check them out tomorrow properly. just wanted to mention that both phones have the modaco 1.7 non t-mobile rom and used original camera app.
Guest McSpoon Posted January 17, 2010 Report Posted January 17, 2010 Just out of curiosity, you could check if they're using different camera drivers by trying this: Dial the secret code *#*#2846579#*#* into the phone dialer - it should launch the engineering mode application. Select the last option "ProjectMenu". (Now here it gets tricky on the U8230 ROM because the menu is now in Chinese whereas the T-Mobile ROM has it in English. But you should still be able to follow from the menu item numbers) Select "4. Veneer information query"; Then "2. Apparatus type query"; It will pause for a second and then it should display something like this... 1. Touch screen type: synaptics-rmi-touchscreen 2. Camera type: External camera type: mt9t013_byd Internal camera type: ov7690 3. NAND Flash type: Hynx-0x5510baad Do both of them say it's a "mt9t013_byd"?

This is wierd because on my pulse i have the 8 notches on the camera but the little tab to the left of it says SAA090908 the same number as the phone with the 4 notches :? wierd

Guest twe Posted January 18, 2010 Report Posted January 18, 2010 Hi Harash!, did you take the photo when the red box changed to green? Does the same problems occur when taking photos about 1 metre away from the distance? Your focussing does look a little messed up though from those 2 photos.

My friend just got himself a new Pulse, i compared it with mine and realized my autofocus really doesn't work. When his cam is focusing it little zooms-in and then zooms-out, but my Pulse doesn't. So I took it to repair shop. Hope they'll fix it 4free.

Guest Harash! Posted February 6, 2010 Report Posted February 6, 2010 I got the phone back from shop, they replaced camera module for free. ;)
