Worth all the work?

Hi guys,

Just got a Hero on the UK 3 network, got an unlock code and using it on T-Mobile ATM

So, am wondering if it is worth all the effort to make a Goldcard, Downgrade, and then move over to Paul's 3.0 ROM, esp if official Android 2.1 is maybe not far away?

In other words, what will I get with Paul's 3.0 as opposed to current firmware, which seems to be a fairly untouched version of HTC standard 2.73

I don't really care about rooting ATM, unless I am missing something, and TBH the standard version seems pretty OK.

Thanks in advance for your help.

BTW, I have tried using flashrec on my Hero and get "bad command" so am assuming I do need the Goldcard/downgrade/recovery/MCR dance?

considering that you need to do it only once i would say it is worth the effort, though i never had to do it myself.

also even if 2.0 is around the corner, i will probably wait for the first mcr based on the 2.0 htc rom, i am using quite a lot "hacked" stuff. and then i am ready, since i already got my custom recovery... ;) especially if i want to go the high road and wait for my provider to release an update, i would get a crappy branded non-rooted rom 2 months after the htc release... yeah sure, but not with me.

you can still install stock images, as long as you download the update.zips from here you have it stock for everyday use, but are prepared to have a rooted image in a few minutes when needed.

My first reason was to get Android Market to show paid apps with MarketEnabler. MarketEnabler needs root. That works. Next, I'm now ready for the Android 2.x ROMs that are coming our way. Also, having root allowed my to remove all sorts of apps I don't need. I could swear my battery life is better and that there is a lot less chatter over the data link.

Definitely worth it. It's not actually as hard as it all sounds to get it working, and you get all sorts of cool stuff once it's done.

Android 2.1 probably won't be out this side of February March either, so going over to the MoDaCo ROM now will give you a snappier handset and much better phone experience whilst you wait.

Even when it is out, my monies on the custom roms still being better than stock.

And remember.

You get all the options of:

Backup and restore

Custom Boot images

Aps2SD (no more 'low memory' warnings.

And the knowledge your device isn't stock ;-)
