Hi folks

Sam here.

ive been reading alot of posts here, and am still confused with a few procedures.

1) firstly, can some one define in simple terms what the difference between flashing and rooting (yes i know there's alot of post here about that, but Ive still got no definitive answer out of them)

2) why is it that i hear all this back up stuff with something called nandriod and other backups, and yet in explenations on unlocker and other tutorials, they arnt mentioned?

3) same deal as in question 2, why arnt radio updates referred to in unlocker and other tutorials - and why exactly does paul refer to them as being so important?

4) is it really that easy to revert back to the original firmware and everything (just like out of the box, or brand new)

5) what will i have in aussy? CDMA or the other one?

sorry in advance for being such a noob, it must frustrate alot of the experts here - people like me keep re-posting the same questions.

(im from aussy, purchased from Sydney)

-Sam ;)

Is the phone a grey-market import or from one of the cell providers? (Telstra?)

If it's got the angled "chin" on the phone and uses a SIM card, then it's a GSM phone. Pretty sure only Sprint in the states has the CDMA version.

Flashing is replacing a bunch of files, rooting is just patching a required file to enable admin-level access to the filesystem. If you're flashing modified ROMs to your phone, then it'll be rooted.

If nandroid backups aren't mentioned, then they should be. If you stuff something up completely it's good to be able to restore a complete image of the device from a working state and get back up & running with no fuss.

Radio updates are an "optional extra". You don't need to use them, but newer versions sometimes improve reception and/or battery performance. A lot of it is subjective.
