A 'Dummy' guide to flashing?

Hello all,

I'm trying to get my head round the business of flashing my HTC Hero to allow an unlock key to be entered due to the handset being locked to Orange in the UK. Is there such a thing as a Dummy guide to flashing the ROM? Also, there appears to be an abundance of ROMs to pick from, how do I know which one to go for?

All I want to do is flash the handset to a version that will allow me to enter the unlock key - I'm not too fussed about flashing it back to Orange as I do not use this network.

Any help would be appreciated - I've spent a couple days trying to understand it all by reading through the forums but I'm not getting very far!

MoDaCo is a good ROM (basically HTC + lots of tweaks and a couple of extra apps) - try it out, worst case you do is restore back to what you have now (following the instructions above will get you a backup to restore to, after you've got out of the initial Orange "fun")
