Change perflock config in the kernel to support SetCPU app

SetCPU supposedly increases battery performance by under-clocking the CPU while the phone is sleeping. However I see many users in the app comments saying that it doesnt work on their Hero, and the developer states the following:

Hero bugs are likely due to the perflock config in the kernel. Tell your ROM developer to disable it.

Can anyone comment on whether MCR could be altered to use the required perflock config in the kernel?

I have tweeted Teknologist to see what he thinks, I tried this app and thought the principal was good, but couldn't get it to work

Ok guys, I'll have a look at it this weekend.

Should be fairly trivial to release a new kernel with that perflock setting.

I'll keep you posted...

this sound promising. can't wait for teknologist to comment, i would love to play with the cpu clock of my hero.

edit: lol, that happens when you open the thread and then leave it there for two hours without answering... i thought i still was the first one to reply ;)

Found it. Disabled it. Will compile a new Teknologist kernel this weekend (or maybe tomorrow...if I have some time). i'll send it to you guys so you can test it.

If successful, I can release a new Teknologist kernel this weekend!

Thanks for bringing this to me !

Well, I did build a kernel without perflock and bought/installed the setCPU app and I can tell you it's a no go...

Slow as hell in changing the freq on wake-up (mostly the same behavior as plain ondemand)

It even exhibits strange behaviors such as the keys light turning on and turning off and on again etc. really a weird wake-up for the phone...

As far as I can tell, there is no real benefit and I don't think lowering the freq below 246Mhz to save battery is a good idea as it seems it can crash the phone if CPU is too slow.

It seems that the best setup of setCPU is the one that mimics exactly what performance cpu governor (my perf tweak update) does...so I don't see the point in buying a 1$ app to do what the perf tweak already does.

Nevertheless if you want to test it send me a PM and I'll send you the kernel without perflocks...

Also let me say that most of the feedback I got is people don't see any battery use difference with or without the perf tweak (I don't see any difference myself)...there are just a few people out there that says the battery drain is huge because their battery only lasts 22Hrs... ! Has anyone here tried an iPhone 3GS (which is similar in UI experience, capabilities etc.) ??? Even with the perf tweak my Hero has a lot better battery usage than the iPhone 3GS, by a very big margin !

Cheers Mr T

I won't bother then, already running your tweek anyway, and trust your judgement.

Cheers for spending the time in looking into it tho

+1

thanks for giving it a try... This is actually my first phone that has had such bad battery performance so I'm still getting used to having to charge it every day. Also grinding my gears with things like battery draining in a matter of hours in areas with bad reception... oh well, have to look forward to the future of batteries!

hi teknologist,

i would like to say a BIG "Thank You" for your great kernel works on the hero.

wish you would give us a public download url with a boot kernel image without perflocks in your kernel thread, please ...

greetings
