Google Mail and Calendar - scheduled syncronisation?

I use gmail and the google calendar, but I don't want the whole push mail thing as I don't need the updates that frequently and i'd rather have a longer battery life. 

I have used the mail application (not the gmail app) to schedule syncronisation of my gmail account (the scheduling isn't very flexible, but it's ok), but does anyone know if it's possible to schedule syncronisation of the calendar as well?

Got the answer to this over on the overclockers forum. You can use the Locale application with a sync plugin to schedule gmail/calendar syncronisation.

Just a quick update to the post above.

In fact, the solution proposed doesn't really work. What locale does is activate auto-sync at a scheduled time, but there is no guarantee that it will synchronise with your google account (and in my case, it never did). 

What I really need is an app that simulates the "Synchronise Now" Option (in the data synchronisation menu) at a time that I specify. 

I can't see such an application in the market. I would consider writing a plugin for the Locale application, but I'm not sure that the necessary APIs are exposed to developers (at least I can't find info on it when I google).
