Sorry this has probably been covered elsewhere but what's the main differences between the T-Mob ROM and the Cupcake ROM?

- Magenta-ness

- 3 x 2 desktop

- Couple of apps (BlockBreaker etc)

- Annoying contacts app

- WnW and jukebox links

- Widcards

Anything else?

Cheers

Hi, total Newbie here :) .

I am running on O2 sim, and planning over the Christmas break to take the plunge and install MCR, either T mobile or Cupcake style. I'm thinking that I like the T mobile 6 home screens, but wonder if Cupcake style offer advantages otherwise. Is one version any quicker to use, and would potential future ROM updates might be easier to apply if I went Cupcake style? Is the Cupcake style Contacts program better (as implied in post above?) and if so how?

I would value some advice..

Thanks, Ed

The T-mobile rom is just too laggy, I dont know if its the T-Mobile branding junk that slows it but the Vanilla Cupcake rom is nice and snappy. Also the T-mobile Favourites app is annoying because again its slow to use and you cant get rid of it. Having 6 home screens is the only up side to the T-Mob rom but i would imagine having them all full with apps and widgets would simply make the phone even slower.

As for applying updates, your probably going to wipe the phone beforehand, so it wouldn't matter as the procedure would be the same.

I would say try both and so you can see the differences.

Thanks for the reply. :)

I'll give the Cupcake style a go and see if I miss having the 6 screens

You want to check out GDE (home replacement), got that running on mine with U8230 vanilla rom... You can customise the amount of screens you want and it uses a cube effect similar to that we saw on linux a couple of years ago... GDE coupled with beautifulwidgets makes for a sweet home on android... Plus all the 3D effects from GDE and the weather animations from beautiful widgets seem to running quite seamlessly on the vanilla rom...

I am entirely new to Android and not much more experienced with Linux. I have looked through the extensive thread on installing the MCR Cupcake. It all looks moderately daunting. Just hope I don't end up bricking the phone! Can anyone give me a rough idea how much time to set aside for this task (I haven't done the December update yet)?

Although I think the t-mobile rom is laggy as well; it can have more than 6 home screens on the canvas - I think I went up to about 20 when I used that rom. Just drag something to the edge of the screen, and the canvas expands.

I prefer the Vanilla release but only 3 screens was a problem. I now use "Apps Organizer" http://j.mp/69fPOl that creates folders for the desktop so you can organize your apps, I think its pretty efficient as only uses up resources when you launch the folder. Have a look.
