Guest mikebdub Posted December 22, 2009 Report Posted December 22, 2009 I currently with Verizon have one of the "data plans" for 5gb a month to tether my phone to my laptop for the internet since I live in a area where no high speed is avail. I used to be able to connect through USB or BT and use the VZAccess manager to use the internet without a problem but I recently installed Windows 7 and now I can no longer get BT to connect the way I used to. USB still works, but sometimes I would rather use my BT connection (the vzw connection speed is horrible in my area anyway but its my only choice..). I was messing with my phone earlier and realized that I can do a PAN bluetooth connection using the Internet sharing feature on my phone and I don't have to use the VZAccess program anymore. Question is,.. I am not doing anything illegal by Verizons terms am I? I pay for the 5gb plan, but I am assuming by doing it this way I am using the phones unlimited internet usage instead of the "tethering" that I am supposed to be using that has the 5gb cap.. Any ideas on this? My reason being is that my phone has way better service when it is on a table near the door/window and my laptop/desk is on the other side of the room. Its much easier to just plug my phone power in, set it and leave it alone and then use my laptop at my desk without physically being tethered.. Anybody have any ideas on how this works? Thanks in advance!
Guest kdkinc Posted December 22, 2009 Report Posted December 22, 2009 a connection is a connection as far as I can see . Your paying to connect...
Guest mikebdub Posted December 22, 2009 Report Posted December 22, 2009 a connection is a connection as far as I can see . Your paying to connect... I know I know.. I just have heard some horror stories of VZW disconnecting people for stupid stuff in the past. I mean like I said I do pay for the 5gb cap plan for tethering but I am just not sure if this is using "that" connection or the connection for only my phone.. I know its the same damn thing, but I just don't want to get dropped for no reason lol
Guest mikebdub Posted December 22, 2009 Report Posted December 22, 2009 like I said earlier I USED to be able to do this via bt using the stupid program that they have without issue until I installed Windows 7.. Now I just can't get the damn thing to work anymore. I would rather use it the old way just to be on the safe side but.. we shall see

One way through the "stupid" vzw access mgr I also use Internet sharing program that some roms have. I find the vzw access mgr to be faster with less drop offs or disconects. You also have a unlimited data plan on your phone {that the one internet sharing uses}so you can use the web on your phone. If you don't use the vzw access mgr your using the Unlimited data plan. You really have two ways to access the net one is faster with a 5g limit the other is slower but unlimited but does drop off once in a while. :) ;)

So say if I average about 50mb a day on my unlimited data plan.. is there any way for VZW to know how I am using it? Like can they tell that I am tethering with my laptop or does it all come out as its coming from my phone? I really have never used the internet connection thing in this rom before today so I am not sure exactly how it works. Thanks in advance :)
Guest natedawg1013 Posted December 22, 2009 Report Posted December 22, 2009 Verizon doesn't like you using your unlimited data plan for your computer just because they want your money. They'll look the other way as long as you keep it under 5GB/month on your unlimited plan. After that, they start watching you, but keep it under and you'll be fine.
Guest brandogg Posted December 22, 2009 Report Posted December 22, 2009 Tethering is not illegal, period. It may be against the TOS of Verizon (I don't think it is though), but it's certainly not illegal by any means.
