Guest volatile_ink Posted December 27, 2009 Report Posted December 27, 2009 A good feature to have on the Hero would be a program that would check for updated applications on each boot/every week etc and download and install these updates automatically. I've checked the market place but could not find anything. Anyone know if such an application exists or is being developed? I'd support its development with a contribution.

I agree that it would be a nice feature to have. That said, I've noticed the odd app that states a backup of user data MUST be made before updating. Also, the odd one that only introduces ads and no new features. For those reasons it might be better to update them manually :)

A one-click option would be better than the current set-up. Granted, some people will argue they want total control over their systems and want to know exactly what the update does/includes. I was not aware that some apps update their ad's only, if an app has ad's in it, I avoid it like the plague and either purchase it or look for an ad-free alternative. Perhaps an auto-updater with a check-list to only check/update selected apps could solve this issue. ;)
Guest ritdaw Posted December 27, 2009 Report Posted December 27, 2009 Personally I would like to be notified when apps are available to update, rather than checking manually and finding you need to do loads!
Guest JuW Posted December 27, 2009 Report Posted December 27, 2009 Hero has a inbuilt function to check out updates, but unfortunately it does not work like it should be. It has give me update notification only once. :)

Hero has a inbuilt function to check out updates, but unfortunately it does not work like it should be. I've updated Twidroid before because it keeps flashing up on the screen, not because I care about / need the fix they're pushing. I always check comments when updating in case there's a negative effect. Sometimes I wait for more comments if it's a regularly used app. I guess a one off email notification would be best. Imo. Anything on the system intruding on usage is a big no no.
Guest kookix Posted December 27, 2009 Report Posted December 27, 2009 (edited) Same for me. I saw an update notification only once, i thought it was a MCR new feature but it isn't ! I like the idea of an "auto-updater with a check-list" Just an update notification will be great: "New versions of some of your apps are available" or "a new version of the current app is available" --> see changelog / see feedback of this version / update --> yes or no =) --> auto update without prompt and confirmation / back to the previous version / choose your version ! =) and when we go to the application manager it is possible to change settings for each app we have. PS: but I understand the need to update it manually to analyze, in case of, what app/version could create an issue. =/ Edited December 27, 2009 by kookix

Guest volatile_ink Posted December 28, 2009 Report Posted December 28, 2009 (edited) For people who don't have Apps2SD and not having a huge number of apps installed (and therefore to update), I can't see this being an issue. But for the rest of us... Granted, the argument could be made that it does not take that long to check for and install updates. But an automated way would certainly be better. Apart from aTrackDog (which is full of ads and does not work), does anyone know of such an application either available or in development? Edited December 28, 2009 by volatile_ink
Guest franklinvv Posted December 29, 2009 Report Posted December 29, 2009 (edited) I would definitely not want my phone to install updates automatically in the background, for several reasons. First of all, I might not like a newer version of a certain app as I might consider it a regression regarding functionality. Secondly, installing applications briefly renders your phone sluggish, failing to register taps and swipes or to do anything at all actually. I did see the occasional notification about updates available in the Market, which in fact is the best option if you'd ask me. However, I haven't seen such a notification for several weeks while clearly dozens of updates have been released to the Market in the mean time. Edited December 29, 2009 by franklinvv
