Guest propellerhead Posted December 29, 2009 Report Posted December 29, 2009 I installed the latest MCR (cupcake style) and I'm amazed of the speed my phone has gained, it's way more responsive than before. No more sluggishness, and waiting for menus to show up. So thanks guys, you're doing a really great job. Now, the problem. As I said, I installed the custom ROM, but I forgot to create ext partition for the app2sd so now all the apps that I install are on the phone instead on the sd card. I'm using the regular card that came with the phone (2GB). Is it possible to create the ext partition now without messing with the ROM. I know that by using Amonrecovery I can create the partitions (ext+fat), and there is a possibility I loose the data (files, settings) on the sd card, but will that leave the ROM unharmed since it's placed on the phone and not on the sd?

I'm pretty sure you can create an ext partition at any time and apps2sd will just move your apps over automatically. However, be careful creating it. I think the option on the recovery menu also creates a 32MB swap partition - that will prevent your phone from working correctly. (I may be wrong on this, but I think that's what it does).
Guest propellerhead Posted December 29, 2009 Report Posted December 29, 2009 Thanks. Does anybody know if the partitioner creates swap partition? (for which I read that can make problems) And if it does, can I create partitions using external (PC) partitioning software (gParted) without loosing the ROM?
Guest _Sebastian_ Posted December 29, 2009 Report Posted December 29, 2009 Hi propellerhead, yes you can use GParted to create / resize your partitions
Guest Dan Mullen Posted December 29, 2009 Report Posted December 29, 2009 Hi propellerhead, yes you can use GParted to create / resize your partitions I opened an ADB shell and used parted: http://bit.ly/5lzn6F
Guest propellerhead Posted December 29, 2009 Report Posted December 29, 2009 Thanks guys. I'll try partitioning now and see what happens :)
Guest propellerhead Posted December 30, 2009 Report Posted December 30, 2009 I tried to create the partitions... and I did it successfully, but... When I restarted the phone (with one ext2 and one fat32 partition) it was ok and everything looked as it should. So then I decided to convert the ext2 partition to ext3. That's when the problems begun. The phone would boot up but wont go past the shiny android logo animation. I tried to repair the ext partition, with no luck. Tried to convert it to ext4, and the same happened. After several times trying to repair the ext partition, I deleted the two partitions and created one fat32 just like it was before. Now the phone is working properly, but I can't use app3sd... So... I know it's a long shot, but can anybody tell me what I did wrong. btw I followed the tutorial Dan Mullen suggested.

Hmm, that's odd - they are the exact steps I followed to partition my SD card. Did you have the December update installed? If not, that might mean the custom kernel can't be used. It's the custom kernel that allows ext3/4 use.

Maybe I should do a wipe and install the ROM from scratch. On other hand, I have a theory :), tell me if this could happen.. The problem is in me starting the phone before I transformed the ext2 into ext3. App2sd copied the files on the ext2 partition, and after the transformation to ext3 files/settings got corrupted. How's that for a "too little too late" debugging? ;)

There was a brief period when you needed to apply a patch as well as the MCR if you had installed the december update, if you did this then you won't have the custom kernel required for ext3/4 support.

Guest propellerhead Posted December 30, 2009 Report Posted December 30, 2009 Repartitioned, transformed the partition from ext2 to ext3, started the phone. Everything looks good. Thanks for the help
