Hi,

I have a few questions about the t-mobile pulse:

1. I was thinking about rooting the pulse, but have heard on other websites of the security issues involved on rooted phones. What are these and is rooting still worth it.

2. How can i increase the pulse's battery life!

Thanks for your time!

Hi,

I have a few questions about the t-mobile pulse:

When you root your device, it allows you to have root permissions while before you didn't, think of root as admin rights, you have full access to read or write system files, so you are a lot more vulnerable to attack if a hacker writes a program that deletes system files to crash the phone.

Now you say is it worth it, I would say yes but it is different for many people, a normal everyday user wont need access to system files, only people that KNOW WHAT THEY ARE DOING and want to fully customize their device so it is completely up to you and what you want to do with the device, but please note some apps in the app store need root rights so you wont be able to use them without rooting the device.

I have seen many suggestions on how to improve the battery life, e.g. switching off things you don't need like wifi or bluetooth and restricting it to automatically check for updates on your apps, if they run in the background

There is also another way where with the pulse, the CPU is not under clocked at all so you are using the full potential out of the CPU, which is a bad thing for a portable device because it decreases battery life so there is an app in the market that gives root users a way to under clock it to save battery life, however currently it is not possible because it only runs when you run it, so if you reboot the device then you will not be under clocked and will need to run the app. I am not familiar with the name of the app but there is a thread somewhere in the pulse section of this forum so have a look round

Thanks. The main reason I want to root is to use apps to sd. I would onlyinstal apps from the google market, so would a rooted device be less secure than an nonrooted one?

How would the security be comprimised on a rooted phone?

if your only gonna be installing apps from the market then I think you will be fine because the apps get checked for malicious code before they are hosted AFAIK, you will only be compromised if you install an app from an unofficial place because that app may contain a virus in it, I would recommend checking the market for an antivirus so you can check for viruses and stuff like that now and again so you wont be 100% open to attacks and wont be able to protect yourself if you are unfortunately infected with a virus

EDIT I done a bit of research and you will be vulnerable if someone sends malicious code that infects the android os through email or sms

I dunno if hacking is a risk so someone will need to answer that for me, check also for a firewall just in case, better safe than sorry

I use mobile security btw for a virus/spyware/malware scanner as its got data backup built in and got built in location detection so if you lose or someone steals your phone then you can ask it through the website to detect where it is and to make a noise so you can hear it

https://www.mylookout.com , this is the website to access everything when you your phone is lost or stolen

droidwall sounds good for a firewall but I havent used it so your gonna have to see for yourself

so would you recommend rooting? also can an unrooted device receive viruses over sms or email?

They can but with because by default the user doesnt come with root rights, the virus wont be able to do much damage (Pretty much will run in the background and infect non system files like photos, music, nothing that a simple data wipe will fix), while when you root it, it allows the user to have root rights and then the virus will be able to do what it wants to do

even though this is a risk, I think it will be a while until android viruses are common, if the android user base is low then hackers wont waste their time creating a virus for a small amount of users, similar to linux and mac vs windows, there is more viruses for windows because of the high user usage not because it is low in security, i am a fan of linux because CURRENTLY I dont need to worry about viruses and get worried about every file I receive through email or off a pendrive

I would recommend rooting your device because it allows you to do alot more with it and open up the restrictions that both the handset company and google have put in the firmware e.g. stopping you from installing apps on the sd card, phone companies do this to both protect the user but also to minimize the cost of having to fix phones that someone has messed up at installing something they shouldnt have been doing in the first place

if you want to be safe then install mobile security even if you dont get a virus, you will still have a lot of features to be able to use and enjoy like 2gb worth of online storage to backup contacts and photos and being able to detect where your phone is on a map and tell the phone to make a loud siren even when it is set to silent mode
