Hi guys,

Im a real newbie with Android (not even got mine yet)

I was thinking could you more experienced guys put together your best/most used/fav apps and tools, and maybe make it a sticky? Ive looked through the Android market place and I couldnt even see a search option is this right?

There also seems to be other independent apps that dont even make it onto the market place that I would completely miss if I didnt spot and then google an app mentioned in a random thread,

Just an idea, sorry if this has been done/tried before

Chris

Well I have only had mine for 2 or 3 weeks now, but the apps I use/like most are:

Beebplayer - BBC Iplayer app

Dolphin Browser - a improvment over the stock browser

Facebook app - Not as good as the Iphone app, but good enough

ChompSMS - Improved SMS manager

Movies - locate nearest cinemas, show listings, upcoming films, trailers etc etc

Places Directory - Information about the area around you, where to find shops, pubs, restaurants, clubs etc

SMS Popup - Lets you read a message without having to go into your messages

Shazam - Ever heard a song on the radio and wanted to know what it was? Point this at the speaker and it will tell you

Wikidroid - Wikipedia App

Oneclick Widget - Widgets for turning bluetooth, wifi, GPS, silent mode etc on and off from your home screen

Wifi Analyzer - Scans the area for wifi signals and gives you detailed information about them

Tv-Guide - Well, it's a TV guide for the Uk....

GPS Status - Compas as well as status of your gps signal

Task Panel - App killer, good for freeing up our phones memory

Wififinder - Finds wifi hotsports and connect to them

BBC news - BBC news app

Appmanager - Uninstall and manage apps

National Rail (Paid) - Good app used for seeing train times in the UK

Battery widget - Widget which tells the % of battry life you have left

Spare Parts - Loads more options for you to tinker with

Sorry for the huge list!

Sorry, Dolphin Browser doesn't cut it yet for me. The stock browser works great.

FREE APPS

Dolphin browser - Hated it at first as it does seem abit laggy compared to opera

EStrong File Manager - Does everything a file manager should and can access FTP and Network Shares

EStrong Task Manager - Faster than Taskiller IMO

Wapedia - Best Wiki app, accesses many big public wiki's

Aldiko - Perfect ereader

Newsrob - Best way to access your google reader rss subscriptions

Quick Settings - Change a few settings so it goes in your task drawer and it saves having all these on/off widgets taking up desktop space.

SMSbackup - Backs up all your SMS to gmail.

PAID APPS

GDE - Good home replacement, worth it just for the conversations widget. Force closes less than any other home app ive used.

Beautiful Widgets - Unfortunately bought it after HTC made them change the look, still a nice widget pack. (Anyone got a backup of the old version? I dont trust warez sites)

Lock 2.0 - Changes the lock screen to a skinable iphone style unlock. Can play music through it without unlocking the phone.

The one before they un-HTC'd it 2.5 or sommat i think

I agree on dolphin being much slower, and the stock browser has a 94/100 acid test rating i believe. My main gripe with it is the fact it refuses to download most file types because they arent supported by the phone, i dont want to download big files but a zip file or two instead of booting my pc up. I'm waiting for the new opera to come out of beta, and in the distant future Mozilla's Fennec browser.

Is there a native Opera Android app? Where can I install it?

Either from the Market or if you want the Beta version (much improved) then go to http://m.opera.com/next

The beta you have to run through the java app to load it which adds a few annoying steps, wish they'd package it into an apk

I would use the stock browser, but it wont hide the address bar/notification bar :)

there's ways to circumvent that...ASTRO for example as the option:

Enable Browser Downloads: Allow the Web Browser to download any type of file.
