Guest petermgates Posted January 7, 2010 Report Posted January 7, 2010 (edited) I just picked up a Sennheiser MM50 iphone headset on ebay thinking that it would be a good replacement for the one that came with my Pulse. Unfortunately I think the wiring may be different as when I plug it in (using the 2.5mm adapter) I get mono sound (from both sides) and only when I press and hold the headset button do I get stereo. I found the iphone wiring information straight away but am having difficulty finding anything for the Pulse. Can anyone help? #EDIT# Just found this unanswered post which is asking a similar question. Edited January 7, 2010 by petermgates

Not really, I asked back in November and no-one answered :) http://android.modaco.com/content/t-mobile...-compatibility/ Although given the wiring details I found (in that post) and what you're seeing I'm fairly sure that the other (non-iPhone one) will be correct. :s

That converts to Right - Ground - Left. You need one more pin for the mike. What you can do ( i know you wont like this ) to cut down the end, and try to recable the plug.

What I mean is there are three rings on the 2.5mm Jack and I'm assuming there are three connectors inside the 3.5mm socket.

But the Shure adapter comes in 2.5mm natively :) It seems mad to buy it, only to cut it off and possibly wire it up differently. I might as well just wire something random up myself B)

So you don't think that either of the Shure configurations will work with the Pulse? How many methods of wiring them are there? :) The Shure MPA-2B has red insulating bands on the 2.5 mm phone plug. Tip = left earphone; Ring 1 = right earphone; Ring 2 = mic/bias; Sleeve = ground The Shure MPA-3C has black insulating bands on the 3.5 mm phone plug. Tip = left earphone; Ring 1 = right earphone; Ring 2 = ground; Sleeve = mic/bias The MPA-3C is the iPhone adapter, the other was the one I was hoping would work with the Pulse. Guest martoto Posted January 7, 2010 Report Posted January 7, 2010 I have tried the pulse's “2.5 to 3.5” adapter to my old HTC Wizard and it perfectly works. Maybe the Pulse and the Wizard have the same pinout but I cannot completely sure. Anyway, here is the Wizard's pinout, it could be in use :) From head to base: 1 Left channel 2 Right channel 3 Microphone 4 Common (Ground) At least it differs from the iPhone's layout.
Guest petermgates Posted January 7, 2010 Report Posted January 7, 2010 (edited) So a bit of searching yielded some information. Wikipedia's page on TRS connectors tells me that the standard for the Open Mobile Terminal Platform (OMTP) is to have the sleeve (ring 4) grounded. OMTP counts Nokia, SE, and Huawei among its members. I checked pinouts.ru and and found Nokia, SE and HTC handsfree headsets have the following configuration: 1(tip) - Left Audio; 2(ring1) - Right Audio; 3(ring2) - Mic/Switch; 4(sleeve) - Ground. iphone apparently swaps the mic and ground configuration which would mean that the Shure MPA-2B is suitable for Nokia etc. and the 3C is (as you already pointed out) for the iphone. My reasoning is that as there seems to be some standard that both Nokia and Huawei sign up to so I would think that the MPA-2B would be compatible with the Pulse. Of course don't quote me on that . As for me - I'm going to have to get the soldering iron out. Edited January 7, 2010 by petermgates
