Advice on pulse backup, updates & general

I have had my Tmobile pulse since just before xmas and think its a great device.

I do have some issues though.

I have ringtones in a seperate directory but they show up in the music player, I have tried other players from the marketplace but they all still have the same issue.

I finally decided to install the december update last night. I knew it would wipe everything not on the SD card.

But the PC suite that comes with it only has MS Outlook as a Sync option which I don't use.

How are people syncing or backing up their contacts. On my WinMo phone I use Jeyo which is very clear and simple to use.

I'm contemplating the Vanilla Cupcake ROM but not sure of it.

I install quite a few apps and get the running out of space error quite a bit so being able to put them on the SD would be helpful, but the rebooting issue concerns me. Can people clarify why you reboot and not shut down.

I see NANDRIOD Backup mentioned but not sure where to get the program or how to use it.

I do like the little slip case that came with the phone but why didn't they put holes in it where the speaker is. When its in the case you can't hear the phone ring.

Sorry if a bit sketchy but typing quicky at work.

Thanks

To gmail, Android can just sync contacts calender and gmail to it. Settings are in: Settings->Data Syncronisation.

For backing up everything else I use Titanium Backup (There's a thread in the Software section here) but it does require root to work

Either rebooting or shutting down cause the issues, there's no difference :)

It's integrated in the Amon Ra Recovery image.

You have to root your Pulse if you want to flash a custom ROM.

If you root it you will automatic install QuickBoot.

In QuickBoot app choose Recovery and the phone reboots into recovery mode.

There you can make a backup.

You can also make an ext partition on your sd card there for App2SD :)

Umm, correction, you don't have to root to flash the ROM, the custom ROMs have all already been rooted.

If you want backup then you can just install the Recovery Image, and then boot into it.

If you have the December update then you can do that by holding Menu and the Red button on boot.

If you don't then you can do it from your PC with the phone connected.

(run "fastboot-<platform> boot <filename of recovery image>" from the command line in the directory you downloaded and extracted the recovery image to.)

Contacts are synced to google but I use WaveSecure for SMS and call log backup.

Nandroid makes a backup of your current ROM (and ext partition if you tell it) so you can restore a working configuration should anything go wrong with your phone. It comes in the Amon RA recovery image.

Thanks for the advice, certainly cleared some worries up. Still not sure about putting a modded rom on yet.

I will keep reading the forum to become more confident.

Not used google or android before so didn't know how to sync or that I could store contacts online. Have logged into googlemail web and inputted contacts and now synced to phone thanks to your advice.
