Orange knows nothing about a new Hero ROM

Hi, just thought I should mention this. I was talking to a tech guy from Orange today, and they said they haven't heard about any new ROMs in the pipeline for Hero for Orange....though they did say the best place is to check on HTC's site for updates, since they come from HTC direct.

Though, as you can see, the UK carriers are totally out of sync, with Three customers getting an update today, whilst Orange and TMobile don't. Whether it is Three catching up, or the others lagging behind, who knows.

Well, as soon as MCR 3.1 comes out, and providing people can confirm that old and new Market purchases complete and work ok, I shall be signing up for an account and entering the world of rooting and flashing my Hero!!

Orange and T-Mobile have the same release at HTC and 3 at the moment. It's true that Orange and T-mobile updates come a short while after the HTC one, but the 3 one just released is the same old firmware that we're used to.

So were 3 users lagging behind? If not, what did the update containt (I could see no changelogs anywhere)?

Can I just point out that its very rare people at the bottom within the networks like t-mobile & orange can ever give you info regrading updates thats reliable, within the companys info like that doesn't get posted in the intranets or even by word of mouth. I started on this forum while working for orange as the first SPV came out and moved onto a high level at T-mobile helping with the launch of the G1 up untill 2008 and can 100% say a rom update can be coming out OTA or posting on the website the next day and no one will know! e.g a windows mobile 6.1 update got posted for the Vario 3 on the T-Mobile website and we didnt find out untill someone bricked their phone..and then it got removed without info..

If you phones serial number works on HTC's site then you in luck when it does come out but if not then a custom recovery image and the excellent dev;s like Paul is ur best bet!!

I used to work for Orange and I can tell you that we weren't even informed when the Hero first came to our network. We just got a promo book from HTC. Still, the day we got it a T-Mobile sales guy came in from the local T-Mo store and asked whether it was windows mobile or not. I only knew we were getting it from reading stuff like GSMarena and AndroidCentral etc.

As far as updates go, I wouldn't care if Orange released the latest 2.x ROM, frankly seeing the speed improvements custom ROMs bring I'll just stick with MoDaCo ROMs and

wait patiently for a custom 2.x ROM

Certainly sounds like I should go with MCR, I just am sh!t scared of messing up and bricking my phone. I have only ever flashed three devices in my time, my Router (with Tomato Firmware - it was only £30 so I wasn't too scared), an NSLU2 (with OpenWRT - it was only £50) and my Nokia N73 (a new unlocked ROM - I almost messed that one up as I accidentaly pulled out the USB cord during the flashing process, luckily, somehow it fixed itself - thus this example of how cack-handed I can be makes me very scared)!!

One question though, how do you go about getting your phone to work with your mobile network, once you have flashed a custom ROM on it? Does the SIM card allow the phone to auto-register with the network and download the necessary settings (like Voicemail number, SMS Centre number, Data Access Points etc.) or do you have to manually record all these things before a flash and then manually input them after??

This all worked automatically for me. I bought a locked Orange phone on eBay, unlocked it and put my 3 contract sim in.
