Guest cezent Posted January 9, 2010 Report Posted January 9, 2010 (edited) Has anyone managed to get Google Nav work in UK on Nexus One? Doesnt look like the case on mine... I cant even see the option of using navigation in Google Map, I m not sure if its because as soon as the phone detects the SIM is UK based, Google Nav will be disabled when first set up the phone. Nope, im wondering when google will release it out to the UK as well. Shame that it didnt ship with the nexusone, i imagine that it will do when the nexus comes to a major UK network that it will be released. I know that on the G1 people had it working, seems that it sends requests through a proxy of some sort which determines location, i cant remember all of it! Still a bit rubbish to have a car mode, where the key feature is disabled. :)

B) So we basically have no google nav AND no multi-touch in UK....nice....I think a ROM flashing is in order after the general release in UK. :)
Guest Joost39 Posted January 10, 2010 Report Posted January 10, 2010 Thx Google - selling a Nexus One phone in UK with Gooogle navigation - And the navigation only works in the states?
Guest thla Posted January 10, 2010 Report Posted January 10, 2010 Thx Google - selling a Nexus One phone in UK with Gooogle navigation - And the navigation only works in the states? It's not sold in the UK, it's sold in the US. Google Navigation has never worked outside the US, probably due to licensing issues, as only their US data is completely their own, the other is licensed from other companies.

Sorry - what I meant was that the only European country, where you can order it direct from Google.com is for the time beeing UK. But one of the superb features onboard the N1 is not working outside US - that sucks... Edited January 10, 2010 by Joost39
Guest domi55 Posted January 10, 2010 Report Posted January 10, 2010 (edited) that sucks... Again... This is due to license issues! TeleAtlas (owned by TomTom) is the owner of this UK maps. So Google isn't allowed to use this maps within their Navigation app. But you can use the 'hack' over on xda :) Edited January 10, 2010 by domi55

I have it working perfectly in the UK on my Milestone. :) True, it wasn't there as stock, but it certainly does work when you can put it on your device. Dayzee

Dayzee Yes, obviously it can work since the data is there, it's just not google's data, which is why it cannot officially be used in their apps unless they license it.
Guest Nitro Fan Posted January 11, 2010 Report Posted January 11, 2010 (edited) This could well be a deal breaker for me, it does not warn us that the driving directions feature (A key one for me) does not work in the UK on their website will it work in Europe? Edited January 11, 2010 by Nitro Fan

Guest Amdathlonuk Posted January 11, 2010 Report Posted January 11, 2010 I had the navigation working perfectly on my HTC Hero running a Lox/Benhaam 2.0 ROM. So it must be doable for the Nexus, it'll only be a short wait.........

Dayzee how did you put it on your device? I presume the same can be done for nexus one too? has anyone done it?

Guest Formel-LMS Posted February 25, 2010 Report Posted February 25, 2010 Install Nav Launcher from Market and load the google Maps from this Site: http://navlauncher.madcowsolutions.com/vie...php?f=1&t=3 It works very very well here in Germany, too.
Guest cezent Posted February 25, 2010 Report Posted February 25, 2010 (edited) isnt Navigon gonna release their own version of navigation app for android at some stage? not a huge fan of Google Nav at the moment after trying it out on another phone. Edited February 25, 2010 by cezent
Guest robley Posted March 3, 2010 Report Posted March 3, 2010 as well as doing it the hacked way which i did before (works perfectly), you could also flash Paul's desire rom from here at modaco which has it working perfectly even better. (night mode/multitouch etc.)

Guest Formel-LMS Posted March 3, 2010 Report Posted March 3, 2010 The Brut version has multitouch and night mode, too....

Actually I got it working, with the HTC DESIRE Alpha 11 Rom, and it was really darn impressive seing that working here in the UK with a Modaco Rom, but not with the Official Stock Rom, or any other updates.
Guest cezent Posted April 10, 2010 Report Posted April 10, 2010 Just came across a good getaround with this problem: Nav Launcher the app is available on Android Market (for UK at least), as the name suggest it launches Google Navigation. However there is an option in the app setting that you can choose to launch the official version of Google Map, or a modified version of Google Map. The official version of Gooogle Nav doesnt work in UK, but the modified version does. When choosing the modifed version, the app will automatically download the modified google map as a seperate app (need to enable the phone install app from unknown source) and everything from then on is simple and straight forward. This approach doesnot require rooting the phone as I m using stock ROM and its working fine. The modifed verson of google nav works outside US but has some reduced funtion (though I havent figured out what functions are reduced as it appeared exactly the same). once install, u will have two google map works side by side among ur applications. I have just ordered the N1 car dock after 30min playing around with this app ;)
Guest rhotov Posted April 10, 2010 Report Posted April 10, 2010 You can search for 'brut6' to get the modified version (based on GMap4.1.0) without using Nav launcher.
Guest cezent Posted April 10, 2010 Report Posted April 10, 2010 You can search for 'brut6' to get the modified version (based on GMap4.1.0) without using Nav launcher. I dont think its on android market at the moment (not in UK at least). The file will need be downloaded from 3rd party website and install as unknown app, that's why Nav Launcher is the easiest method as it downloads it directly to the phone SD card (without the need of a PC or random google search). Thanks for the tips though. The default one Nav launcher download is based on Google Map 4.0 so brut6 will be newer.
