Google contact groups

When sending SMS/MMS, the phone lists my entire Google contacts database, which includes hundreds of emails, people with just landlines, etc. I've created a group called "Mobiles" which is just people who have a mobile number. I also have several other groups (Friends, Family, etc). After a sync, the first group appeared on the phone, but with zero contacts. The other groups have not appeared, despite numerous syncs, and even a complete wipe.

How do I get the contacts into the correct groups on the phone?

I'm using the T-M MoDaCo custom rom (I don't really like how the vanilla rom works. The T-M rom seems more intuitive to me)

If you go to settings then 'Contact settings' then 'Edit sync Groups', you tick the groups there

Not in the T-Mobile ROM - it doesn't let you sync particular groups. All or nothing I'm afraid :S
