Car Holder

Hi guys,

When I was considering a new smartphone, one of the main requirement was to use it as replacement of GPS in car navigation. I knew that there is not much valuable navigation software for android, but was tempted from the T-mobile offer. Now I have Pulse, and I am quite happy with it. I am really amaized how much offer this device for its price. Its GPS receiver is really good and it has potential to do the job. I am looking forward to iGo android release, but meanwhile I found a nice GPS soft - Sygic's Mobile Maps.

Anyway, the only issue remains the car holder. I am unable to find some decent one, made exactly for Pulse. I don't want these bulky and ugly universal craps. Moreover, I prefer landscape mount, but most of them are not. I saw a couple nice holders for iPhone and I am curious if the Pulse will fit them. Both devices are pretty close in term of dimension and shape.

So, does anyone find a good solution for this? Any suggestions are welcome! :)

I'll compare my pulse with friend's iPhone for size comparison (tomorrow), though I'm sure dimensions must be available on web somewhere. When I last looked, they do look very similar in size.

I found one in Halfords that rotates through 360 degrees - it has 4 spring loaded rubber prongs which grip the pulse (and dont interfere with any of the buttons). You separate the prongs which then spring back to grip it. You can then put the phone at any angle you wish.

Its a bit fiddly to start with, but you soon get used to it - you just need to be sure that you get the phone flush against the base.

I mount this on the vents with the clips supplied and have removed the base.

If you can get it anywhere other than Halfrauds i'd recommend trying, stuff from there is almost always overpriced. If you dont need it right this second, get it from eBay or some other place!

Does look like it includes clips? My Cigarette lighter is right at the bottom near the gear stick so need on to go onto the vents.

Wish brodit made a holder I could use my clip then :)

I have an old slip case for the pocket from an iPod Classic 160GB that was never used, the Pulse fits in perfectly.

So having looked at the iPod 160GB classic dimensions they look pretty similar

http://developer.apple.com/ipod/iPod-class...-dimensions.pdf

iPod

Depth 13.5mm

Height 103.5mm

Width 61.8mm

Pulse (Not very accurate my measurement with ruller)

Depth 15.0mm ( 1.5mm Difference)

Height 116.0mm (12.5mm Difference)

Width 63.0mm ( 1.2mm Difference)

So a holder that holds an iPod on the side only should fit in theory if it uses som kind of foam.

So something like this http://j.mp/5M3RPV.

Have to pop into some shops and try some on the phone.

The ipod one looks good. I was looking for a cheap solution to this as well :)

Well just ordered one from ebay now, will let you all know what its like. I know you get a lot of similar one but this ones arms dont look like thier massivly deep like most universal holders. Only problem is it designed for a vent but will see if I can attach to a suction arm if possible.

I need a vent one as the cockpit in my MX-5 is quite limited for space. I have bought one from ebay but the legs that go in the vent snapped off on insertion. Seller replaced but haven't tried them again yet but envisage the same again.

One from the cigarette lighter could be an option but as the charger point is on the top this could be an issue.

Here's the link as requested.

I currently use a holder I bought some years ago for my HTC TyTn WinMo phone, the Hermes was a more chunky phone but similar height and width, it fits in nicely, albeit at a diagonal angle, which actually works out okay as it faces me when I'm driving!

Well got the holder today, not fitted to the car yet. I intend to attach to a suction arm anyway.

It looks good, matches the look of the pulse well. only ugly thing is its pretty deep at the back

Seems to grip pretty well gave it a good shake and never came loose, the rear vent holder look a bit flimsy but I intend to attach to a suction arm anyway.

Heres a short vid showing the holder from various angles and me shaking it rather vigorously.

Managed to nip into a Halfords yesterday and bought one of these; http://bit.ly/9H01Pl and it's a perfect fit for the pulse. It can be used in portrait & landscape and the grips do not cover the buttons. The clips at the bottom can be moved or taken off completely. Not cheap but it seems very well-made. I had bought a cheaper one from a random phone shop but it disintegrated in no time.

I had been using a mount for my gps with a elastic band to hold it in place!

Thanks for your review.

I'll check one out later this week.

Sorry to bring this thread back from the dead, but...

Seeing as we now have Google Navigation and much more responsive screen, it would be great to get a cheap car holder which swivels from vertical to horizontal.

Can anyone recommend a cheap holder which can do that?

I am using this one:

Car Holder on e*ay

(hope noone minds linking to an external source)

Made for HTC Touch HD, but fits for the pulse as it would be made for it.

The best: The upper "clip" is designed to be removed, thus leaving the top of the phone freely accessible for a charger.

I've just bought one of these http://cgi.ebay.co.uk/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?Vie...em=170409794336 which looks to be a windscreen mount version available in the UK. I'll let you know how I get on. I've got one of the Halfords spider jobs at the moment but it's just annoying.........

I think this must be the same holder (but with windscreen mount) that sunnnny got in Germany. I've very happy with it; does indeed fit the Pulse like it was made for it.Only slight drawbacks are:

1. you cant rotate it to landscape in situ easily (i.e. you need to refit the holder sideways on the mount) unless I'm being very dense.

2. The location of the spring clip over the USB isn't ideal. But it's not really a problem as you just push it back to fit the cable.

3. The car charger supplied is mini-USB for the HTC phone this was designed for, not microUSB. But I wasn't interested in that anyway. £11 for a solid holder alone is worth it for me.

My Halfords spider mount is now residing in the bin :(

Oh and I wonder if the holder may interfere with the microphone somewhat. It doesn't block it as such, but it is pretty close. Not an issue for me as I use a Bluetooth head unit for calls in-car but just so you know......
