Seriously.... try reading the forums before you post a question!

I guess he is talking about flashing .bin firmware image, that is usually flashed using Acer Download Tool from the garage.

Afaik there's still no way to flash bin with linux. I'm on ubuntu too, still I had to use my office pc to flash... :)

I think .bin is a packed file containing all rom files (system, boot, recovery..): probably if we manage to "expand" it we can flash using fastboot..

I know that the Acer download tool itself uncompresses the bin file before flashing (just look into the tool folder while flashing, you will see a new directory with all the files, system, boot, recovery, ...)

This tool can also be used in a "R&D" mode, where you just point a folder with the img and mbn files (change the the Usermode entry in the ini file for that). This allowed me to root & flash recovery without going through the hassle of opening the device again, removing battery, ...

Any news on this?

How do you uncompress the bin file? Standard archive reader on Gnome cant open it.

When you have the img files (boot, system etc) cant you just use fastboot-linux -i 0x0502 flash system ../system.img using the system.img in the bin file? Off course it is maybe possible to keep your recovery (if you already have lickonns recovery that can be kept, else you can immediately flash the lickonn recovery) and the same with the improved disc0 boot.img (1 ghz if you like)?

use Wine which can run windows .exe:s and run the acer flash tool from there.

Even if wine lauch he acer tool correctly, you won't be sure it won't crash during flash. In this case your phone will be broken. You can also try VirtualBox that allow you to install a REAL windows XP in a vritual machine you launch under linux. It is really stable.

Yeah but nether one or the other works well enough with usb ports to be sure it works all the way. But you don't necessarly nee. to flash you phone with the acer software : you could install Lickonn's recovery and then install an update.zip (Angio, Maxima's or Benham's ). For that you need to install the android sdk for linux.

Acer Download tool don't start with wine and i try virtualbox too with a virtual xp on it but seems to be some bug with usb virtualization so the update fail at the beginning of the process.

I've used another pc with xp for update :D

this is a pain in the ass for me aswell, VMWare i find is usually the best option for flashing phones and such when your limited to linux....you should just resize and setup a windows partition for times like this(gparted live is your friend), it's only the initial flash anyway :D.

suppose we can unpack the bin file, or get the files already unpacked, is there a way to flash the radio, using the fastboot tool?

flashing "system" is not enough, the acer tool does much more than that + recovery...

I almost had my Liquid bricked by flashing from within Virtualbox. While I was flashing, the phone was rebooted in bootloader mode (I think). The phone is a different USB device in this mode so it was no longer connected to the guest OS (windows). So Acer tool was waiting for the Liquid to show up, but I wasn't able to connect it without interrupting the flash process, because this can only be done while the guest system is shut down. I had to disconnect and I was left with a (fortunately) semi bricked phone. I was able to recover, but I don't have the courage to flash from a virtual windows any more.

I am almost sure that successful flashing from VirtualBox is possible, but one needs to know what he is doing very well and prepare in advance.

I would recommend finding a real windows machine or just avoid flashing.

BTW, from my experience with wine (which is not much) I think it is far too unstable to be used for flashing.

Yes I had the same problem, probably needs to prepare a filter in virtualbox to always automatically add acer liquid device usb id. I had to use the hard reset button to make my phone boot again.

Who made the Acer Download Tool?

Its written with .net, maybe it could work with mono in Linux?

It dont work with mono yet, but perhaps the developer can modify it?
