Guest graham Posted November 22, 2002 Report Posted November 22, 2002 There was a post on the Orange list about not being able to install software onto the SPV unless it is Orange branded software? Is this the case? If so, that single reason would prevent me from getting one...
Guest Paul [MVP] Posted November 22, 2002 Report Posted November 22, 2002 I haven't tried this yet, but my contacts tell me this is the case. The microsoft root certificate has been removed from the final version, and all software that needs to be installed has to be signed with an Orange certificate. You can kinda understand why this is the case, but it is a nuisance, especially for developers. I'm hopeful that some way will be found to add new certificates to the SPV, thus allowing me to write software and actually test it on the device! In the meantime, the Orange co-branded Handango store is the place to get stuff from! P
Guest graham Posted November 22, 2002 Report Posted November 22, 2002 What a downer. I'm a developer myself and was keen to have a play around. Will have to hold out until one comes out that isn't locked like this - or until someone finds a way around it. If anyone manages to install non-Orange software on this thing please let me know.
Guest Paul [MVP] Posted November 22, 2002 Report Posted November 22, 2002 Just to confirm, just tried to install regedit from www.phm.lu, but could not as I had insufficient permissions  P
Guest Gaf Posted November 23, 2002 Report Posted November 23, 2002 if this means you CANT run all the sw that will be written for the smartphone unless orange do a version then mine is going back :D
Guest BenS1 Posted November 26, 2002 Report Posted November 26, 2002 I to am a developer and I'm only getting the phone so that I can develop my own stuff for it... if I can only run Orange stuff then I don't want it! Fancy telling you that you don't have sufficient permissions... its your phone you should be able to install what you want on it!!! Orange are doing it because they want to reventue from all their own software and from charging for their certification programme!
Guest Cent Posted November 26, 2002 Report Posted November 26, 2002 Orange are doing it because they want to reventue from all their own software and from charging for their certification programme! Actually no .... they are doing it to prevent illegal activities on their network using it for viruses etc. However the heavy charge on certification is beyound me.
Guest Paul [MVP] Posted November 26, 2002 Report Posted November 26, 2002 Er, hang on a sec tho, is that a confirmed figure? Where has this number come from? P
Guest Cent Posted November 26, 2002 Report Posted November 26, 2002 Er, hang on a sec tho, is that a confirmed figure? Where has this number come from?P - Orange took a bucket - they threw in some random high figures - threw in a bit of bul....it - mixed it all up - took out one of those little numbers ... and said : This is what we will charge those that wish to support the phone that we sell. And there this figure lived happy ever after :D
Guest adrianb Posted August 7, 2007 Report Posted August 7, 2007 I have just bought an Orange e650, are you saying that all these software fixes contained on the MoDaCo site, to overcome the phone's bugs, will not work because of some sort of restriction made by Orange ? What about applications purchased on websites like Smartphone.com ? And programs like iSilo ?
