Guest Mantisen Posted January 14, 2010 Report Posted January 14, 2010 Since Im going to have to park my sweet ass on an airplane next week I thought I'd like to have something sweet to watch (like Family guy, a movie, or something else :)). I know the N1 supports H.263, MPEG-4 SP, and H.264 AVC video but Im not certain of what software is best to use when converting to these formats; so naturally my question is: Has anyone here converted some videos to their N1, and if so what software do you recommend? Are there any freewares that can do this or do I need to pay up a few bucks for it? :) Thanks in advance. Mantisen

Select the Ipod legacy profile, change the resolution (800 width/480 height maintain AR), up the bitrate to 1500kbit, change the audio to 160 kbit. My 720p converted content looks absolutely brilliant on the AMOLED display. You might want to save your new profile for future easier conversions. Edited January 14, 2010 by packetlss

Guest Mantisen Posted January 17, 2010 Report Posted January 17, 2010 hi i tried the program and it can only convert to mkv or mp4 which cant seem to play on the n1. what file format did u guys convert to? Hi, I had some trouble with this aswell at the start but found out what was wrong. With handbrake open go to Tools -> Options -> General and uncheck "Always use iPod/iTunes friendly file extensions (.m4v) for MP4. With that unchecked the file is exported as .mp4 which android recognizes and can play :) And as a tip, following the settings packetlss scribbled earlier works great (atleast for me).
Guest eddyZ Posted January 17, 2010 Report Posted January 17, 2010 i tried that but it still says mkv and mp4. i downloaded the program from here. http://handbrake.fr/downloads.php is that where you got your version too?
Guest PAQman Posted January 18, 2010 Report Posted January 18, 2010 I'm also using Handbrake for converting my movies for all my Android-Devices. They are working perfectly on my Hero and on my new Nexus One. These are my settings (Profile) Container MP4-File Picture - Width = 320 - 800 (choose what you prefer, I mostly chose 720) - Keep Aspect Ratio = On - Anamorphic = None Video Filter - Detelcine and Decomb = Default - the rest only whenn needed. I chose 'Off' Video - Video Codec = H.264 (x264) - Quality = Constant Quality RF22 (higher = smaller filesize but in loose of quality) Audio - Audio Code = AAC - Mixdown = Stereo - Samplerate = 44.1 - Bitrate 160 - DRC = 0 Advanced insert this line in the settings field at the bottom and hit enter: 8x8dct=0:bframes=0:cabac=0:no-fast-pskip=1:analyse=all:weightb=0:me=umh
Guest PAQman Posted January 18, 2010 Report Posted January 18, 2010 i tried that but it still says mkv and mp4. i downloaded the program from here. mp4 is working perfectly for me. Chose the MP4 container and when needed correct the filename to ***.mp4
Guest eddyZ Posted January 19, 2010 Report Posted January 19, 2010 thanks paqman. its working for me now.
Guest SatanR1 Posted January 20, 2010 Report Posted January 20, 2010 I always use Format Factory ............... http://www.formatoz.com/ Just un-tick all the extra rubbish it wants to install .... and it's actually a decent program.

Tried it and got it working on the N1? :) And if so, are there any specific settings that you used?
Guest minimonk Posted January 21, 2010 Report Posted January 21, 2010 So what are the limitations of the AVC decoder on Nexus One? What codec profile? Only low level - up to what resolution/bitrate/Level? CABAC? bframes?
Guest minimonk Posted January 21, 2010 Report Posted January 21, 2010 BTW - PAQMan thanks for the guide. This would suggest that support for AVC is similar to iPhone/iPod Touch (Low profile with no CABAC/bframes). I'm just wondering if there is any documentation out there that would help us confirm this or fine tune these settings - I'd like to make a profile for HandBrake. Thanks!
Guest PAQman Posted January 21, 2010 Report Posted January 21, 2010 You're right, the AVC support seems to be very basic. I've tested many settings and lowered the quality until I got a good looking video that will run smooth on my HTC Hero. I choose a higher resolution for the N1 and I'm very happy with the posted settings. But I'm sure it can be optimized for the CPU power of the N1. My Hero can't play a video encoded with the CABAC option. The screen stays black. I haven't tested it on my N1, but can't image the codec has been improved.

I have used these settings in handbrake, but my N1 only playback sound and blackness(playback is flawless in VLC on PC). Have tried switching settings such as "iPod 5g support" on and off, with no luck.. Any idea what i can do different to make it work? (source is 720p .MKV)
