Guest byakkotai Posted January 15, 2010 Report Posted January 15, 2010 Hi, do the wipe options on the recovery boot menu do anything useful for someone who wants to fully wipe their phone in anticipation of updating their custom ROM?
Guest Posted January 15, 2010 Report Posted January 15, 2010 Hi, do the wipe options on the recovery boot menu do anything useful for someone who wants to fully wipe their phone in anticipation of updating their custom ROM? This is the process of performing a wipe, you use the wipe option in the recovery boot menu, also use the nandroid backup to make a backup of the current roms to your sd card. Once you've performed these two, you use the update feature to load the zip file of your custom rom from your sd card.

It might be wise to do those in the other order though.. i.e. Nandroid Backup first then Wipe :)
Guest pcs333 Posted January 15, 2010 Report Posted January 15, 2010 think he means he would like some advice on best way to use the different options on the wipe menu before a new rom. there are about 4 different wipe functions and would be nice to know what each one does.

Wipe data/factory reset - Deletes the entire contents of the data partition (mounted as /data) - same as the factory reset option from within the phone's settings. This will remove all user-installed applications (if you're NOT using A2SD) and settings, and reset all configuration to ROM defaults. Wipe dalvik-cache - Deletes the /data/dalvik-cache folder (Will also be done as result of "Wipe data") Wipe SD:ext partition - Wipes the ext partition on the SD card (mounted at /system/sd) - This is where user-installed apps will be if you are using A2SD, which you probably will be. If you do a "wipe data" then apps installed on the SD will remain afterwards but the configuration for the apps will be erased. Wipe battery stats - Deletes power usage logs in /data/system/ (also done as result of "Wipe data") Wipe rotate settings - No idea. None of the options touch anywhere other than the /data/ folder or the ext partition on the SD card (if you have one, and you probably do). Usually you won't need to wipe data for a rom upgrade, but if you experience any problems then doing a wipe (AFTER doing a nandroid backup) and then reflashing the rom should fix any problems. Marketplace will remember the last few apps you installed once you log back in.
