:) None that support Avi yet, they all have to use the hardware decoder, so only h264 and mp4 up to 320X480 are supported on the pulse

Just looking at the new android phones on the tmobile website i noticed this in the description for the Samsung Galaxy Portal:

"The DivX video player and MP3 player will keep you entertained on the move. The 3.2 megapixel camera has autofocus and you can upload your photos in a flash"

Is this a tmobile lie? (cba to look around to find out!)

EDIT: i should say the above text appears after pressing 'Read More' above key features

It's true. My friend has one, and the default player can do divx ;)

it's not a lie. it's an exta for the samsung galaxy. i'm pretty sure though, that it's possible to rip it off and make it work on any android device if someone tries hard.

Hmm, I just found a full system.img for the LG Eve, which also has a DIVX player. Its part of a custom rom for the LG Eve:

http://www.zacpod.com/?p=80

Though I'm not sure if we can just pull some APK's from the system.img file, as it references DIVX at several places.

And after doing some searching, I think its a program called Arcsoft Powermobia Media Player that gives the DIVX playback. A folder named ArcSoft in the 3rd_party folder confirms this I think.

Anyone had any luck finding an apk of Arcsoft Powermobia Media Player?

The ArcSoft stuff from the LG Eve comes in at around 40MB, as well as the APK's it uses it also uses a whole stack on files in the 3rd_party folder and different drivers for the camera.

Their is just to much data to fit on the Pulse.

It is so frustrating. It says: "RealPlayer supports all of the core Android media codecs and formats including MPEG-4, H.264, MP3 and JPEG." - LIE

I've tried to play an xvid video, and guess what, the player even didn't show it as an supported format, so I couldn't try to play it. It doesn't support divx/xvid.

So far I found two programs which are said to be good in this field:

-ROCK player (still in early Beta). Installed it, but didn't work at all for me. No force-closes or anything: just nothing happened when I wanted to play back an AVI video.

-The second goes by the name "xyflash". It has some hefty UI and is a commercial APP. So I thought that it'll be the real deal.

It CAN play back my 700 mb Avi movies, but LAGS. Not heavily, but one with a clear vision can notice.

So I think it is safe to say that the Pulse's hardware is simply outdated, as on a HTC Desire this "HQ" video playback is possible (as they report that the playback is seamless).

Any thoughts? Maybe you have a prog which can play back simple, old-fashioned AVI files without lagging? Perhaps I (too) should just convert all my AVIs into MP4s? Or just go and buy an Iphone or a Symbian-based Nokia phone? (as this kind of HQ playback is supported with these phones, without third party softwares. They also have built-in equalizer.)

PS: My Pulse runs on the Hungarian 2.1 Update, with near-stock RAM (which Isn't large, around 40 mb with 2.1 installed). But I doubt that RAM-size is the problem here.

(o_O) I tried it too, but the video playback was laggy as hell.

I use myplayer (the bbc iplayer app) and found I can download the programs to SD at a higher quality than just streaming them. However it requires MP4/AAC decoding to play back and the android default player doesn't do it (video fine, no audio). Tried rockplayer as suggested by the myplayer app, but only one version works and the audio is laggy/broken up as hell.

Any other recommendations? :(

Maybe the difference is in the SO, I'm running 2.1 TRE + FLBMOD Tre 1.2.

Even subtitles play fine for me.

I have FLBMOD Tre 1.2. I didn't flashed the original Tre 2.1.
