Hi,

Noob here, I apologise if this has been answered already. I have a stock Pulse and would like to put the U8230 ROM on, and was wondering whether to apply Superboot first, as this is suggested by Nikki Locke's instructions here, but in the Superboot thread Paul says at the top 'This is not necessary if you plan to use a custom ROM, it's only necessary if you want to root your stock ROM!'? I would like to use A2SD, which I thought you needed root access to use. If this is the case, are Nikki's steps solid, and I only would need to additionally partition the SD using the recovery image before installing the ROM?

Thanks! Especially to Paul for his work.

You don't need superboot installed to update the ROM. I installed the amonra recovery image first though, which allowed me to do an easy backup, and provided the "boot image from SD zip" option which will do the ROM upgrade for you.

Once the ROM is installed you automatically have a rooted phone, as far as I understand; there is a "superuser permission" app.

Hope this helps

Dave

Thanks David, so there would be absolutely no benefit to Superboot? I'm not exactly a tech whizz who's going to be tweaking this and that, but I would like to uninstall unneeded apps like RoadSync, which I've found you can use adb for. Also for partitioning the SD using the recovery image, would this be on a freshly formatted card?

We're at the limits of my experience now - I've not used superboot. From what I can tell from reading this forum, then there is no need for you to use superboot. You'd have (access to) root permissions once running in the new ROM. One of the forum geniuses will hopefully correct me if I'm wrong on this.

Regarding RoadSync, consider paying a tenner for AdFree membership and getting access to the ROM kitchen, where you can download a ROM without RoadSync. (It lets you add/exclude various bits).

When I partitioned my card, it formatted it for me as part of the partitioning process as I recall. You'll lose everything on it.

Thanks mate.

Does anyone recommend using Superboot? I can see flashing the ROM roots the phone, but while reading around in the forum I keep seeing people who having flashed custom ROMs have also used it; can't hurt to apply it right?

As far as i'm aware there's absolutely no need for it if you're installing a custom rom. Only reason I can think of someone wanting it immediately before installing the U8230 custom rom is to pull that game (block breaker i think?) from the phone so as to re-install it after flashing the custom rom. Not sure if custom t-mob themed rom comes with the game anyway - imagine it prob does tho :)

Thanks starkos - tempting as I'd like to see the back of that game! Regards to partitioning the SD and wanting ext4, and looking at this, is it possible to go into adb and straight use the steps: ./adb shell, sdparted -efs ext4 -ss 0, or is this for upgrading a partition and not to be used on a new card, not having first used amon_ra partitioning? Could someone please let me know how to actually set up and use adb lol? And is using ext4 a bad idea with a class 2 card?

Sorry wassupjg, my Linux/adb knowledge is close to nill lol! But there are plenty of knowledgeable people on here.. But with regards to partitioning the sdcard, I just used the option within the Recovery Menu which allows you to choose the size of each partition (remember to set swap partition to 0). Once that's done, in Recovery you can also then upgrade the just made ext2 partition to ext3 & ext4

As a tip, 512MB is usually good for any applications you have downloaded.

I super-rooted my phone before I installed the custom rom because at that time I could not get ADB working properly; I thus needed a rooted phone to reboot into recovery mode.

As others have said, it shouldn't be necessary.

How would you apply the Wavesecure add on, seeing that it should be installed on the phone rather than on the SD with A2SD - do you put it into the ROM zip?

Also, is it the general consensus that EXT3 is more stable than EXT4?

Thanks.

You just need to install Wavesecure by placing the Wavesecure zip file in your SD root, then going into recovery and installing from zip.

and yes, EXT3 definitely seems more stable then EXT4

Cheers brah.

I'm using this post and adb to remove Roadsync, but when listing the apps on the phone, there doesn't seem to be a Roadsync apk - is it listed as Exchange_RS150.apk?

If anyone knows how to remove Roadsync I'd be most appreciative!
