Hi

ok, apologies, but I have have a bog standard T-Mobile Pulse and wondered what these ROMs are (I know, potentially a stupid question to you clever guys/gals on here, but if you dont dont, you just dont know!)

What do they do?

What do they additionally give you?

Why all the variations (vannilla, kitchen etc!)?

Do they invalidate any warranty?

If you are technically just a bog standard Joe like me, could I do it?

Many thanks

Chris

Custom ROMs may add some things you don't find in the stock ROM.

A custom ROM is a replacement for the installed stock ROM of your phone.

One main advantage of custom ROMs is the performance.

The U8230 Vanilla ROM is soooo much faster than the stock T-Mobile ROM :)

Why all the variations (vannilla, kitchen etc!)?

Basically there are 2 versions yet:

1. T-Mobile style

I've never tested it, but it should be a bit faster than the stock ROM.

But it has the same UI/Style.

2. The Vanilla U8230 ROM:

As said before, its very fast.

It removes all of the T-Mobile things from the phone.

It has the stock Android UI (look T-Mobile G1)

With the "kitchen's" you can modifiy the ROM you want to download (add/romve apps from the ROM).

But kitchens are only aviable for AdFree/Plus members (you have to pay for that).

Do they invalidate any warranty?

Unfortunately i don't know.

If you are technically just a bog standard Joe like me, could I do it?

If you're having any troubles, you can ask i think everybody in this forum for help :)

Basically its not very difficult to install a custom ROM.

But just have a look at the ROM Threads.

Greetings,

They give you extra features and flexibility. Custom roms are additions to the standard roms

There is a speed boost, and by rooting your phone there are a lot of useful apps (task killer, setcpu, etc) that are available to you. You also get access to the bleeding edge of hacking, for example people working on the T-Mobile pulse are working to add Flash and Multitouch.

Vanilla is the stock Android firmware. It's how google made android, many prefer using it to the style t-mobile use. The kitchen is a generator made for ad free members, it allows you to customize what's in the distro. It's not strictly necessary, but it can be fun to use. T-Mobile stock is what you get with T-Mobile (with the updates).

Not as far as I know, If it all goes balls up, chances are they won't find out :)

Yes, probably. Ask any questions you need to know on these forums.

Good luck!

Thanks all for help. So is does rooting a phone mean putting on a custom rom?

Also, if I went with Vanilla, do you still get the updates, if they appear on the T-Mobile website, like the December update? Would future updates still work?

Cheers

Putting on a custom rom is a way to root, but rooting does not necessarily mean putting on a custom rom (it's better to though).

As far as updates go, yes, I believe you do still get the updates, but you should make a nandroid backup beforehand just to make sure you can roll back in case something means that you can't.
