Guest wabe Posted January 17, 2010 Report Posted January 17, 2010 My phone was fine yesterday but when starting it this morning I received a 'SD damaged'-message. After investigating a bit further it seems that ext partition is fine but fat32 partition is damaged/lost - cannot be accessed neither by computer using USB-cable nor by Androzip. One thing I don't quite understand is that the mail-client still have all settings intact and 'Market' still know which apps are installed. I thought the data necessary for these apps to function was stored in the data partition. In order to not make things worse how should I proceed? OK to just format fat32 partition and make new nandroid and Titanium backups. My fear is that a format of the data partition would erase settings available now. Is there any tricks available through 'adb' to save the day? The phone and sd-card is just around 5 month old and the phone was shut down orderly.
Guest werziluk Posted January 17, 2010 Report Posted January 17, 2010 (edited) I have had this problem before, so I should be able to help you. First of all what operating system is on your machine and when you attempt a mount what does the error message say? Did you get windows (if your on windows) to attempt a recovery or repair? Second do you use a cache moving application on your phone such as TA Utility? Chances are either a file transfer has gone wrong or the cache moving has got confused. With the file transfer what can happen is when everything says complete (especially in windows) sometimes its actually not and if your quick to unmount then problems can be caused. The cache application can also cause errors after flashing a ROM with no wipe. Edited January 17, 2010 by werziluk
Guest wabe Posted January 17, 2010 Report Posted January 17, 2010 I have had this problem before, so I should be able to help you. Thanks for the quick reply! I'm on a Vista machine. To give you some further details: - Phone started up with SD damaged error - Using Modaco 3.1 and app2sd - The ext4 partition (w/ apps seem to be undamaged) - Cannot mount data partition on PC only option is to format - Cannot mount in Amon RA either - Tried a nandroid backup and that ran without error messages - strangely enough (and nandroid can "see" the backup folder) So how should I proceed? My PC can "see" the data partition but it appears as unformatted. Only option available is to format. You mentioned a "cache mover" - I'm not familiar with this and not using. Running standard Modaco Rom with ext partition for apps and fat32 data partition. Would really appreciate further help! Note: Have access to Live Linux CD if there are any good tools available in Linux.
Guest wabe Posted January 17, 2010 Report Posted January 17, 2010 How can I just format the data partition (fat32) partition without touching the rest? Nandroid seem to just offer the option to repartition and format the entire sd-card. Since all apps and settings seem to be untouched I would like to just format one partition, run a new nandroid and titanium backup to move to PC before maybe replacing the SD card
Guest werziluk Posted January 17, 2010 Report Posted January 17, 2010 It sounds to me as if you have had a bad file transfer on windows, or windows has tried to repair it and made it worse. Not many options if you need to keep the EXT partition. It sounds to me like you need to get that SD card reformatted. Do you have a spare SD card you could pop in just to do a Nandroid + EXT backup? Also have you tried using recovery mode to move apps+dalv cache to SD (under OTHER). I know you should already have that in place but could fix and error on the SD card between partitions.
Guest encrypt Posted January 17, 2010 Report Posted January 17, 2010 Hi guys... I had the exactly same problem three days ago... I have no clue what caused it. I just rebooted my phone and after that the sd was damaged... And again the same situation - ext partition was OK, fat32 not... but under Ubuntu it was auto mounted... the strange thing was - with the file manager I couldn't access the files, but in a terminal I could cd to /media/sdb1 and see all the files. I just did a 'cp' of all the content and did a format of the whole SD. Hope this helps.. and I hope we will find out what caused the problem.

I used adb and parted to check my partitions. Both the fat32 & ext is visible with correct sizes. Running 'check 1' shows errors but ext is OK. Considering using parted to delete and recreate partition "1". What still puzzles me is that all settings are still basically OK. Having non-functioning fat partition should basically correspond to a factory reset in my uneducated opinion. Don't sound good that several people are having this problem!
Guest wabe Posted January 18, 2010 Report Posted January 18, 2010 Used parted to recreate my fat partition. Had to reinstall all apps however. Having a good backup off-loaded from phone seems like a very good strategy....

Having a good backup off-loaded from phone seems like a very good strategy.... Hmm, strange... I couldn't see the partition with any partition manager tool (i tried to use gparted under ubuntu) and even under XP under device manager... both time it was just loading... a very long time (waited about 30 mins) and gave up. What ROM are you using? I think it could be ROM related. I've used MCR 3.1 (did a upgrade from 3.0 to 3.1 before the problem appeared)...

Guest encrypt Posted January 27, 2010 Report Posted January 27, 2010 okay.. today this happened to me again! I just shutdown my phone and when it got back - sdcard damaged.. before the reboot i was using connectbot local.. but i dont think this is the problem.. Its either mcr 3.1 or the way that amon ra partitioned the sd? (im using the 2nd latest version) Suggestions ?
Guest shenshang Posted January 28, 2010 Report Posted January 28, 2010 btw guys...EXT3 and 4 will kill your SD card so fast.....
