HTC Keyboard behavior

I currently have a CDMA HTC Hero. Whenever I change the text field I'm editing the HTC keyboard always jumps back to the letter keyboard. It's only a problem when I'm entering data into a spreadsheet. I'm only entering numbers so I have to hit an extra key everytime I change cells and it really slows me down.

Does anyone know of a setting I can change in the keyboard to keep this from happening? Or is there another keyboard app that does not do this? I've tried Better keyboard and Even better keyboard with no success. It would be fine if the keyboard only has numbers since that is all I am entering while working on the spreadsheets.
