HTC HERO FW 2.73.661.46 - Can't Root, or downgrade...is it me?

Hi, Long time viewer...first time poster. Have run into some issues with my "hero"...ironic name at this point.

I have followed the guides to do create a goldcard so I can downgrade from the 2.73.661.46 firmware on my HK imported phone. (the only reason I am doing this is to get the android market place and to be ready if HTC ever do an upgrade to 2.1 android)

I have followed the steps to make the goldcard many times (and I am not usually completely inept at this sort of thing...IT tech and console modder by day)

I am still stuck with getting the the 131 error when the signature part comes up in the RUU. (ERROR[131]:CUSTOMER ID ERROR)

I have tried multiple sd cards, nokia, kingston and sandisk, to no avail.

I have tried the flashrec method, but that doesn't work as I can't boot into recovery mode.

SO...in the words of John, Paul, George and Ringo. HELP!

The error message suggests that the Goldcard isn't working. Reformat the card completely and make sure you're doing all the steps correctly. Some major parts can easily be missed and it's quite easy to get it wrong.

What OS are you using? Windows 7 can be problematic.

It's not the phone's fault you can't root it, it does its job as it was designed to do in its current state.

Go over the article here:

VERY carefully. Doesn't matter how clever you think you are (I'm also an IT Tech and used to chip a lot of Xbox's and have been known to resolder exposed IC's in watches, and still missed a step the 1st time) - take it slowly and carefully. Reset EVERYTHING back to default (uninstall software/drivers, do a "factory reset" on the phone etc).

customer ID error means that the RUU you're flashing is incompatible with your original phone's branding. Like flashing a T-Mobile RUU to an Orange Hero.

Yeah, I am not blaming the phone I love it...just that currently its not "my" hero.

I have done the gold card process 3-4 times on each chip (brand)...detailing the steps even to the point that I have printed and highlighted each step...still no joy, I can only assume now that my card, card reader or particular pc is screwy at some binary level, so I will get a new card + reader and use another pc...and see what happens.

Thanks for the help/info so far.
