How to get Android phone to auto-setup operator settings from SIM ?

Unlike my, going back many years, windows mobile phones, it seems that my Milestone running Android does not automatically pick up all the internet, MMS and SMS settings for my Operator from the SIM.

Should it be capable of doing this if so, how do I get it to do that ?

I think the settings are in the phone on an APN list, it takes the name of the operator from the sim and try to find the settings in the list.

I don't know if the milestone is sold official in Sweden if not Swedish operators are problay not in the list
