Guest robbiewillia cinderella Posted January 27, 2010 Report Posted January 27, 2010 i will get my new unlocked pulse tomorrow i have read some post here but i want to ask some question as a new pulse, i would want to backup the original firmware in the phone so, what are the step to do? 1. install PC Suite from the package 2. install ADB and Android SDK to windows XP 3. install December Update 4. install install-superboot-windows.bat (for root and gain the recovery mode) 5. use Nandroid in recovery mode (to backup the original firmware in pulse) After that, i can start install the custom rom are the process correct? and the question about SDHC if i buy a SDHC in fat32 format, and i want to use App2SD make the ext partition in recovery mode (the option : Interactive SD partitioning)? : )
Guest Spooke Posted January 27, 2010 Report Posted January 27, 2010 Hey, I also want to know this, and if i can revert the whole process incase my device breaks and i have to send it back to T-Mobile?? I have rooted a G1 before and installed custom roms, this phone seems alot easier, whats the risk of bricking it by doing these processes? Thank you!

The custom ROMs come with root by default, so you will effectively have superboot once you install one of Paul's ROMs). You should be able to partition from the recovery mode, yes. In terms of putting the phone back to stock, just install the december update - the instructions for which can be found from T-Mobile. If you partition the SD card that came with the phone, they might want you to return this as well, so you'd need to remove any ext partitions you created for apps2sd. I don't know how to do this in Windows however, but you can just use gparted in linux.
Guest Spooke Posted January 27, 2010 Report Posted January 27, 2010 Ok, Im ready to start this :D, First I have to install December Update since my device says Build Date: September? ** Will this format my phone to how it would be on a very first boot, eg. no apps installed.. ** Then I install the Custom Recovery Image, and Partion my memory stick to what? Then do a Nandbackup, Then install the custom rom, Im not sure which to install :), Is the Vanilla faster than the Tmobile version?? Can someone verify that these are the correct steps? B) Thank you all

B) Thank you all 1) Yes it will format your phone to factory settings, so it will come with the standard T-Mobile apps (e.g. Google Maps, phonebook, music player etc.) 2) You need to format it - 0 for the Swap partition, then however much you want for your apps 512mb should be plenty and then the rest is automatically assigned to be standard memory 3) Both have their own advantages, but I personally prefer the Vanilla ROM Nandbackup is not really necessary as all your data will be erased when you install the December Update

Guest gunark Posted January 27, 2010 Report Posted January 27, 2010 My quick question - I'd like to go to the vanilla rom (improved battery mainly) but I've got some choice apps I like already on the T-Mobile rom. Can I back them up and restore them to the vanilla easily or bite the bullet and just download them again? That being the case, can I take a back up of the apps for when (if) 2.0/2.1 appears?

I believe they will redownload as they are synced to ur google account??? or are you talking about things like the music player etc :)
Guest gunark Posted January 27, 2010 Report Posted January 27, 2010 I believe they will redownload as they are synced to ur google account??? or are you talking about things like the music player etc :) The market apps, not the T Mobile installed ones.

Guest Spooke Posted January 27, 2010 Report Posted January 27, 2010 (edited) Ok, I just intalled recovery, Im at the blue screen it says, Wiriting recovery etc... - Okay What do i do now lol, the instructions say nothing about what to do after this stage :), Please post asap Taken from the recovery thread, Should i do what this person says? I then took the battery out and put it back in again (is this the only way to get it out of USB FastBoot?). I then went into Quick Boot (which seemed to have been installed), and pressed the Recovery button. Edited January 27, 2010 by Spooke

Guest starkos Posted January 27, 2010 Report Posted January 27, 2010 Yeah it is lol, thanks for ur reply though, I put the rom on my memory stick, so shall i partition the mem stick now, or after ive installed the rom? :) Thanks Do it before (remember to set swap to 0!) then after that there's an option to upgrade ext2 to ext3 under partition sdcard so do that, then you can connect usb to pc whilst still in recovery and transfer the custom rom .zip back over again and apply it. May be worth doin a system wipe whilst your in recovery as well (before flashing custom rom)

Don't worry though I'm sure it's not a big deal, maybe try taking out the usb cable if it's still plugged in? Also pretty sure you can do that upgrade any time, it doesn't re-format the partition or anything n only takes a few seconds..

Regarding the guide I don't suppose you would list your steps (If it works!) as a guide would you? Does the phone need to be unlocked from T-mob before you try all this?? Good luck!

Well go recovery and do a factory/system wipe anyway and reboot again n see what happens
