Guest pulser Posted February 2, 2010 Report Posted February 2, 2010 (edited) Apologies for what may be a silly question, but I was looking at getting one of these unlocking sim shims, but I wondered if people here had to use the hole punch style sim, where the little ic sticks through a punched hole on your sim, or if anyone is using the ultra thin no cut version. reason I ask is that I don't fancy cutting my new contract sim, although I know fine well all the electronics are stuck under the gold contacts and that the rest of the card is dead space. Alternatively, does anyone know how likely it is that t-mobile will unlock my phone after about 3 months of an eighteen month contract, and if so, whether it is free or not. Sorry for sounding lazy, but I just wanted to suss out my options, as I'd rather buy a rebel sim than pay t-mobile any more than I do already! Cheers Edited February 7, 2010 by pulser
Guest pillock Posted February 2, 2010 Report Posted February 2, 2010 They'll always charge to unlock (£15 I think) but I don't think they'd do it so soon into the contract... and you wouldn't save any money, since you're still locked into contract for 15 months. They might even want to charge you the 15_months x monthly_fee upfront before they'll unlock, until your 18 months are up it's still their phone.

I've no intention of leaving, and am perfectly happy with t-mobile, just that I'm going on holiday in a month or so, and want to pop an old pay as you go sim in, with web disabled, just so I've got a working phone and wifi "tablet". if they try and charge me 15, I'll raise it with customer relations, as I also had a simple technical query that was hopelessly handled by 150. Otherwise happy, but I'd rather give rebel or turbo sim my money, as that would at least be reusable. Or I'll look at a third party unlock site like htc code. thanks for info though. For anyone with rebel sim, question of cutting still stands, but their site suggests a cut may be needed.
Guest shenshang Posted February 2, 2010 Report Posted February 2, 2010 i heard the ultrathin one breaks very easily. I personally used the one with the chip, it worked fine, one simple cut was fine.
Guest AlunJ Posted February 2, 2010 Report Posted February 2, 2010 i had to but mine, but it came with a sim cutter, was simply and worked perfectly
Guest pulser Posted February 2, 2010 Report Posted February 2, 2010 i had to but mine, but it came with a sim cutter, was simply and worked perfectly Thanks all. I'm going to look at the cut sim one, and maybe compare prices with a code unlock from third party. anyone know a reasonable rate for rebel sim, as prices seem to vary quite a bit. trouble is that I'd end up buying a programmer too, then it just gets expensive. So, I'll need to see. thanks for helpful replies, everyone.
Guest volatile_ink Posted February 3, 2010 Report Posted February 3, 2010 They'll always charge to unlock (£15 I think) but I don't think they'd do it so soon into the contract... I'm with Orange and I purchased an unlocking code (£15) 2 days into my 24 month contract! Try calling customer services and just see what they say. I doubt if they'd turn down an opportunity to make some extra cash, after all your still going to have to pay for the contract.

Well, just to update, I bought an unlock code from 'e-unlocks' on eBay for about £7.50. Half what T-Mobile wanted to charge, and I got it within a couple of days. So I've marked this thread as solved. Thanks all for the input.
