Hello.

Is there a way to calibrate the battery on HTC Hero?

I want to try get more usage from it than 12 hours between charges.

It's Lithium-Ion, you can't "calibrate" it.

If you want more than 12 hours, turn off wifi/bluetooth/GPS/3G if/when you're not using it.

Also remove widgets which use network (twitter, facebook, ...)

Could also try adjusting the screen brightness and keeping it low.

If you want more runtime from a single charge, why not invest in an extended battery?

Screen brightness seems to only have 3 settings. Too bright, very bright & bright.

I didn't know such a thing as an extended battery existed. Where could I get one?

Also, how can I turn off both wifi and 3g at the same time.

Even when i turn wifi off 3g always comes on then.

There seems to be no way to just set the phone into phone only modede.

(I tried turning sync & mobile data off but I notice the 3g symbol still shows in the status bar )

I've noticed that HSDPA uses far much more battery than WiFi. On my last WinMo device (HTC Polaris / Touch Cruise) I had HSDPA on at all times syncing in real-time with Exchange. Batteries lasted 2-3 days. WiFi on the Polaris did suck battery drie in just a few hours though as was barely usable.

On the Hero it just oposite. I tried first to use HSDPA with real-time Exchange sync 24/7, but that sucked the battery dry in less than one day. Now I've disabled mobile data totally and just keep the WiFI on at all times. When at work or at home exchange now syncs via WiFi. This simple change has more or less doubled my battery life. True WiFi will automatically turn off when the screen is off.

To turn 3G off go into Wireless settings and select "Use 2G networks only" (not available in the MCR 3.2 beta's). To disable Wireless data, hold down the power-button and select "Mobile Network".

I have HSDPA on 24/7 and usually get about 2 1/2 days out of a charge. I rarely use wifi (as my wifi is rubbish). My network is 3G _only_ so I couldn't lock it to 2G even if I wanted.

There are widgets available to switch on/off all radios independently. If you've got stock or MCR, add a widget from HTC Widget -> Settings or take a look at the market for some switches.

As for brightness, the market should have some apps for that to.

I'm running the cyanogen ROM for HTC Hero.

When I switch to "2G Networks Only" I still see a "G" icon in the top bar. It doesn't seem to ever turn off data completely.

Just a stab in the dark here, but the phone maybe connecting to a 3G network (hence the icon) but not using it?

Can I ask, don't you have a data plan?

Yup. I have a data plan and have entered the correct APN settings. I just wanted a way to cut down battery usage by completely turning off data access through HSDPA/3G/2G.

I suspect that the phone still tries to connect though even with APNDroid disabling the APN settings because all it does is change the text in the APN so it cannot connect - that doesn't mean it doesn't keep trying.

There still seems to be no way to completely switch off data on the Hero.

May get flamed for this comment, but the Hero is a very 'online' device. I'd never have one without a data plan. Having to charge the battery at the end of each day is just something to put up with. Short of an extended battery and/or multiple chargers at various locations have you thought of another device?

Have an old iPhone 1G too ... same story ... short battery.

These "extened batteries" that have been mentioned before.

Where can I get one?

and the obvious question if there are extended batteries available why didn't HTC put 'em in the Hero in the first place. ;)

It seems the technologies are racing ahead and the batteries are lagging behind, though I'd rather not walk around with a thermo-nuclear reactor in my pocket! ;)

Did a quick search on Amazon.co.uk and found this.

I suppose the reasons for not including them are size and cost.

Spare 'normal' size battery perhaps?

The app is called APNdroid.

How long does it take your battery to charge? Mine is +3 hours.

Also could everyone reading this thread give feedback about poor battery life to HTC?

It might make them fix the 2.1 firmware they release.

Click the link below to give feedback if you have poor battery on HTC Hero:
