Guest GB-UK Posted February 13, 2010 Report Posted February 13, 2010 I've been trying to access an app from the market but every time I do a search it doesn't appear, been doing a little searching and there is certain apps that are protected on the market place that can only be accessed by phones on the google white list. Does anyone know if the pulse has been put on this white list?
Guest Bakes Posted February 13, 2010 Report Posted February 13, 2010 google whitelist? I have never heard of such a thing, but I have not personally been limited to not downloading any apps on the market. If you can't find apps, chances are the apps are for a newer version of Android.

The app I was looking for was twitdroid pro and it doesn't appear at all. Did a google search and came up with this thread that talks about protected apps and how they don't show up on unregisted devices.
Guest Bakes Posted February 14, 2010 Report Posted February 14, 2010 remember that it is twidroid not twitdroid. It certainly shows up on my pulse
Guest GB-UK Posted February 14, 2010 Report Posted February 14, 2010 (edited) remember that it is twidroid not twitdroid. It certainly shows up on my pulse Yes thats the one and it doesn't appear on my phone! Not running any mods, its just an off the shelf pulse aswell with the t mobile update from the end of last year. Just double checked again to make sure and all that comes up is the limited free version (that I've got installed) but not the paid one (twidroid PRO). Checked for the apps in the link in my post above and they don't show up for me either. Edited February 14, 2010 by GB-UK

That could be why. You may have more luck with a MCR ROM. Correct me if I'm wrong, but doesn't the Android Market display results based on your "ro.build.fingerprint"? (which is set in the /system/build.prop file). So it is possible for an application to only appear for certain device. And that fingerprint often changes on each major update so they can even restrict it to whether or not your device has been updated. In the MCR 1.7 Vanilla ROM, Paul has changed that property to pretend it's a HTC Hero (there might be more apps made available for the Hero) otherwise it would have been a French U8230. So some apps may show up for the MCR ROM but not for the standard Pulse.

From what I've read T mobile should have registered the roms for the pulse with google to gain access to the protected apps and haven't done so.

Yes, maybe they failed to inform Google about the Pulse december update. It wasn't an OTA update (which are often distributed by Google) so Google might not know anything about it. Or like you say, perhaps the Pulse isn't registered at all. It is odd. I have the standard december update (no speedy MCR ROM) and twidroid pro doesn't show up. I've even tried changing the fingerprint to a HTC Hero but it still only shows the free version (perhaps there is some cache that has to be cleared?).
Guest GB-UK Posted February 14, 2010 Report Posted February 14, 2010 This seems to be a problem thats been around for a while on other devices aswell, any idea who to contact at t mobile to get this sorted out?
Guest Bakes Posted February 14, 2010 Report Posted February 14, 2010 From what people have been saying, just flash to one of the modaco custom roms (T-mobile or vanilla) and your problems will all go away.

If I did that would I loose all the built in programs that come with the pulse or are they also in the custom rom?

If you flash to T-Mobile custom, no, you won't lose anything. If you flash to vanilla, as far as I know the only program you would lose is the crappy block breaker game, and you can backup and reinstall that yourself (or alternatively go adfree and have a rom 'baked' with it in).

Is this what Mcspoon did? As he says that this didn't work (see his post above).

He tried to do some manual hacking with the december rom but failed; I can verify that protected apps work fine with the Modaco Custom Roms, this is why I was confused to start with :D
Guest McSpoon Posted February 14, 2010 Report Posted February 14, 2010 Yes, I was experimenting with changing the "ro.build.fingerprint" property. That alone didn't work (I think it may have had something cached of the previous search session). But I can confirm that, after installing a MCR Pulse ROM, twidroid pro now shows up for me. Both Pro (3.99) and the free version are available when using an MCR ROM. (I used the Vanilla 1.7 ROM as I already had it downloaded, but the T-Mobile style MCR ROM is likely to work perfectly too). So the modaco custom roms do give you access to protected apps on the Android Market. It's bizarre that the standard Pulse isn't registered correctly.

Guest GB-UK Posted February 15, 2010 Report Posted February 15, 2010 (edited) Ok installed the custom rom and it still doesn't show the protected apps. Anyone got any more ideas? I installed this ROM. EDIT My bad, it is working!!! Edited February 15, 2010 by GB-UK
