N00b seeking advice on ROMs

Hi all,

First of all, what a great forum!

Now, I have an HTC Hero GSM. When I got it back in September, I rooted the phone. Can't recall what I did, but I followed some video guide and whenever I boot I can do a key combo and get to some greenish interface :-) Yeah, I said n00b :-) I went for a MoDaCo ROM and now, when heading into about on the phone, it says 2.73.405.5 146733 CL#61267 MCR2.2c, which I DO have a grasp of what indicates :-)

I am considering upgrading my ROM and I got a bit lost in this jungle of versions, ROMs and what not. So, I hope someone would help me out, please?

- how safe is it for me to upgrade to a newer ROM?

AFAIK I can download the 3.x ROM and upgrade it without losing anything? I have just booted to that green thingie and I have done the nandroid backup (FYI the version of the app I use is CyanogenMod v1.4 + JF).

- if so, how should I do it?

It seems to have changed, how you do this, from reading on the forum, compared to last time I did this? When reading here, it seems to be a lot different from what I did. My plan was to place the update.zip on the phone in the root of the SD-card and then just run it from that green menu. It seems an awful lot different.

- and if do, what do I "get" from doing it?

AFAIK when reading the link here I get a good idea, but I don't know what compcache is, and why some parameters should NOT be used at the same time, despite both being enabled per default?

- what android version is there in the ROMs?

AFAIK all ROMs I can find here are 1.5, but it is not clear... I have been told, Modaco ROMs do come in newer flavours?

Also:

I would really like Android 2.1 - like everyone in here for sure - but I am tired of waiting, and 1.5 is getting outdated, and the unofficial comments about HTC in Belgium is not confirmed so... and I have read that the 2.1 modified ROMs lack features like paid apps - but I don't have that in Denmark anyway, so.. what is my loss, speaking functionality?

Right, downloading 3.2 beta 5 and will try! Still not sure if I have backup'ed all but sure will find out :-)

Just use a software to backup your contacts,messages,call log etc like Mybackup or Sprite backup. Both are good
