Guest Soaa- Posted February 22, 2010 Report Posted February 22, 2010 (edited) A buddy of mine who works at Telus confirmed that the 2.1 update will be available from Telus late March. Since Telus usually gets updates later than everyone else, I guess this reinforces the mid-March expectations that we've already had. Just hang in there, everyone. Certainly sounds good for mid-March! :( Forgive me, but which country is Telus from again (I'm from UK, so not really sure about all these networks). But more importantly, and the reason I ask, is: is it CDMA or GSM? Being as HTC will need to build 2 separate versions, one for each radio technology. Just wondering, as I don't know much about North American carriers, and don't really have time to read up on them all... Thanks :(
Guest FunkTrooper Posted February 22, 2010 Report Posted February 22, 2010 Googling will tell you that Telus is Canadian and they use CDMA.
Guest Soaa- Posted February 22, 2010 Report Posted February 22, 2010 (edited) Not the Telus Hero though. The joint Telus/Bell network is GSM HSDPA. Most, if not all of their new smartphones are on the new network. We can run the standard MoDaCo ROMs no problem. Sorry I didn't clarify that. (: Edited February 22, 2010 by Soaa-

I knew there was more to the Telus network than I though t(I had heard stuff about CDMA and GSM, but thanks for clarifying :() Makes my silly question seem worthwhile now. Interesting that they have two networks though... I presume they are transitioning to GSM now if the newer handsets are coming to GSM. Well, back to the topic, that sounds good news. I posted elsewhere that T-Mobile UK (GSM HSDPA of course) announced a forthcoming Hero update for April. That breaks with standard form for T-Mobile, who usually deny all knowledge and then release it months late, but it certainly sounds like the gears are in motion for a mid-March release of some sort (be it internal for networks to spoil- sorry, customise- or a public release version). Sounds good though! EDIT for spelling :( Edited February 22, 2010 by pulser
Guest Soaa- Posted February 22, 2010 Report Posted February 22, 2010 Yeah, Bell and Telus are both transitioning to HSDPA 3G, with a very comprehensive network. Speeds and coverage are amazing now; I'm happy I was one of the first on the new network! It seems they're keeping the CDMA network for dumbphones and their value subcarriers. Oddly enough, Bell's Palm Pre still runs on the old network. They got themselves tangled in a pretty bad marketing knot.

Keep the dumbphones on gprs or 3g if they're lucky, and keep hsdpa for the smartphones (preferably Android only-no iPhones lol). Guess only a few people would actually like that though (probably the grand sum of modaco members and that's about it :() We can always dream though... out of interest, what hsdpa speeds do you get on this 'special' network? On the T-Mobile bog standard hsdpa, I get 2mbps downloads and 700kbps uploads. Just wondering if the greater concentration of smartphones on the new network has any adverse effect on speed...
Guest Soaa- Posted February 23, 2010 Report Posted February 23, 2010 (edited) I just did a test, and it's a very stable 3Mbps down and 1.2Mbps up. The network in my area is due for yet another upgrade in spring though, so it might actually reach 7.2Mbps down. Update, spiked at around 3.7Mbps down, too. Edited February 23, 2010 by Soaa-
Guest stevenz Posted February 23, 2010 Report Posted February 23, 2010 Telus is your only option if you want a 850Mhz HSPA Hero AFAIK - I had to import mine. Seriously, what does HTC have against North America and/or 850Mhz HSPA/WCDMA handsets? I'll probably have to wait for Telus to get the Legend/Desire so I can get one of those too unless I change network providers to the one with the appalling customer service (Vodafone).
