Guest MoWeb Posted February 25, 2010 Report Posted February 25, 2010 I have a Telus HTC Hero with the latest radio 63.18.55.06JU_6.35.09.26 (latest MoDaCo ROM also). The signal strength is always fluctuating from no bars to 4 bars with little phone movement. I would like to know what radio Telus Hero users are using and which radio is the most stable? Is the radio the problem? My Nokia E71 is always steady at full bars. Thanks to all :( Mo

Thanks to all :( Mo I have the Hero (No telus) but i will tell my experiance, i really never didn't noticed any drops. the internet gets slow sometimes(but this is when im in the train). But what i noticed is if the 3G is on there is another Bars for the 3g, if its shows low, like 2 bars, i turn off 3G and shows full bars. Edit: I have the same radio as yours and using MCR3.2B5 Edited February 25, 2010 by commodoor
Guest venturerider Posted February 25, 2010 Report Posted February 25, 2010 My understanding is that the radio power is turned down when not in use to preserve battery. It will only draw enough power to listen for incoming calls.

Guest venturerider Posted February 25, 2010 Report Posted February 25, 2010 Are you experiencing crappy call quality?

Guest pulser Posted February 25, 2010 Report Posted February 25, 2010 Call quality is good but I'm getting lots of dropped calls because of the fluctuating signal. Can't really offer any radio-specific advice for Telus, but my experience of GSM radios is that the newest is usually best. AFAIK, the radio is kept powered up slightly more than to listen for incoming calls (it also gets notified of push emails from exchange syncing or gmail/google apps mail). Hence a data connection of some sort (presumably 3G, else voice calls wouldn't work if it was 2G for data and 2G for voice) must be kept up, at least enough that the server can reach the phone's radio and trigger an interrupt. The newest isn't always best though (it's really a case of YMMV). So sorry. Not much more than that to add:(

Guest pulser Posted February 25, 2010 Report Posted February 25, 2010 Thanks for the info... No problems :( If it's really as bad as you mention in the OP, I'd look at popping a stock rom back on using the oldest RUU available (presuming such a thing exists), then seeing if there's still a problem. If so, maybe seek service on it (could be hardware, but unlikely). Maybe 2.1 will bring new radio???
Guest Dr. dre Posted February 26, 2010 Report Posted February 26, 2010 You can try lowering the version of your Radio ROM, see if any of the Radio works for you.
Guest stevenz Posted February 26, 2010 Report Posted February 26, 2010 I've got similar issues with my Telus Hero, at work in the city it gets a pretty good signal and generally stays on 4 bars and shows about -75dBm signal strength, at home it bounces between 0 and 3 bars just sitting on the desk, usually showing around -105dBm. Our house is not in a great spot for HSPA reception, although for GSM or CDMA (2/2.5G) is fine, unfortunately the network I'm on is HDPA/WCDMA (3G) and calls are usually pretty questionable. I've got another little Nokia 3120 Classic as a backup phone and while it gets _better_ reception, it's still not marvellous. I did a bit of experimentation with radios and as far as I can tell so far, the latest JU radio seems to be as good as, if not better than any of them. Unfortunately, my original Nandroid backup is long gone, and I don't think Telus have ever released any ROM updates to try out? It generally works ok though, hopefully we eventually get one of the nice new models over here that does quad-band WCDMA (or at least has 850 & 2100mhz wcdma). Dreams are free...

I wanted to return to the original ROM but Telus doesn't have one. Your situation is similar to my situation. I guess I'll keep the JU radio until something better comes along.

Dude it will take Telus ages to get an update of Android 2.1(I think), why don't you search for a Stock RUU from Telus, I'll get you the link, if I find it any.

I appreciate your help and I agree Telus won't hurry the update :(. I tried finding the original Sock RUU from Telus but no luck. I think it doesn't exist for consumer download.

Even I searched it on Google, They haven't released any RUU for Consumer download, the only thing you can do is try some other Radio ROM, and check which one works for you, I had done this if I were you.
