18 Month Omnia i900 user. Confused about my next move.

I'm close to upgrade date on my present deal and I'm very confused about my next move.

I've had the i900 Omnia for close to 18 months now. No really nasty issues to report with the phone other than when I tried to flash/update the ROM (complete newbie) and made a total mess of it. That was the one & only time I attempted this. It needed to be sent to a repair centre. The only REALLY annoying issues I've had is the very poor screen display when outdoors in the sunshine and the occasional lethargic nature of the touchscreen interface. If these two issues had been corrected in the new Omnia II, I think my choice would be made. But, sadly it appears not! While most reviews I've read speak very highly of Omnia II it appears these two problems are still there. I know the new phone has an AMOLED display which is obviously an improvement. But I'm still quite hesitant??

Can any Omnia II users confirm if these two issues still exist please?

The HTC HD2? Most reviews I've read make for pretty good reading on this phone. I suppose its a possibility. Although do I want another WinMo device? If I don't then I suppose the logical choice would be the iPhone 3GS? Quite a few friends/colleagues have this phone. I have genuinely yet to hear a bad word said about this phone. I mean a SINGLE bad word! This is certainly a possibility in my mind.

However, as yet I'm REALLY REALLY undecided! Hopefully that's where you guys come in. I realise this is a WinMo forum so perhaps I might not get many or any recommendations for the iPhone! What I need is some advice/pointers, not necessarily about the three phones I've mentioned, although they would be welcome, from owners to the relative good points & bad points of their phones! My only stipulation is the phone must have a touchscreen interface and be a recent addition to the market. I'd rather leave the WinMo option open to debate.

Hope I'm not asking for too much and I look forward to any replies.

Regards - Shaun

I am in the same position at the moment, would love the HD2 I think, but first i am going to flash the rom to a new 6.5 and see how that goes and save some money.

As stated in my post, I'm not at all comfortable flashing the ROM for the reason stated.

Research Android phones and see how they stack up. Google is doing a very good job with this platform. I have an HTC Magic and love it.

Omnia was a great phone, and still holds up. the only phone that fits my taste now it is HTC Desire (the perfect phone in my opinion :(). Hardly wait for it to be available in RO.

get an omnia II if you want the thing you're used to. nothing has changed much, besides outer look. it will be lazy as hell with official ROMS and faster, but buggier with customs.

HD2 it current top end. multitouch and lots of apps being developed for it+XDA forums support. will be hot for a year i think... and the screen is HUGE.

iPhones are the same from early start. sentence "there's an app for that" is basically true. lots of geeky fanboys there.

i could also find nexus one between above ones. maybe look around about android, or even try it on omnia-experience is 1000x faster on nexus, but just to get an feeling what you are dealing with...

finally it's up to you. read some reviews, maybe testdrive if you have chance, and find what you like :(

since you are not comfortable with custom roms I would recommend the iphone or an Android phone. They are both Great out of the box

Thanks, corwest. I hadn't thought of an android phone.

Thanks for all replies so far. I think I might have a look at what's in the Android market for starters.

Does anyone know when the Win7 devices are coming to market?

My contract is also ending soon(ish) in May and I am very much interested in an HTC Desire as it seems to have the same snappy 1GHz processor as the HD2, just on Android which I am very much liking the look of.

I would definitely switch to Android. The only thing holding me back right now is the lack of Kinoma Play on Android, but Slacker Radio makes up for it...almost.

I wouldn't buy another WM phone right now, at least not on a contract. If you want to stay with MS better wait until Q4 2010 when Win7 is scheduled to go live and wait for user reports. There are bound to be bugs in the beginning and it will be interesting to see how quickly and effectively MS will address them.

Personally I wasn't thrilled with what I've seen of Win7 so far and since it won't be compatible with WM 6.x apps I have no reason to stay with MS. I'm going to wait and see what the next iPhone is capable of, compare that to whatever is available on Android at the time and then go for whatever ticks the most boxes for me in terms of hardware and software.

I know you said you didnt want to flash.

But if the phone is out of contrct nearly why not give it a go you have nothing to lose and if it doesnt work then get the new phone you wanted.

BTW i have just flashed mine today very easy and it works superbly a lot better then the previous rom.

I am saving my money and sticking with this for now and waiting to see what comes out next year when i can just buy an unlocked phone now.

+1

I think it's now over with the static today screens and 10000+ small & useless apps, that simply duplicate the job of good web sites.

my 2c - I wouldn't buy any Android or iphone now - it's simply total crap compared to what WinMo offers (no calendar support, no tasks, no proper wlan handling, no real PC pairing, no FM radio, no front camera!).

Better get a cheap symbian (n97 or e7x) from e-bay for the next several months...

My own 2cents:

- WinMo7 looks like crap at the moment, mostly becouse it seems that Microsoft is trying to make a OS like the iPhone (meaning they want to control u which I hate^^) (of course by the time it's actually available it may be complitely different/better)

- WinMo 6.5 is not so bad in the end

- iPhone I don't like for too many reasons to write here^^

- Android will probably be the way to go if WinMo7 is really bad as it looks now, hoping Google will not go on the same direction as Apple and Microsoft

So at the moment I'd go for a WinMo6.5 phone, HTC HD2 or Omnia2.

HTC HD2 if you care most about speed and power (and if you don't mind the price, but that depends on where u live, if you buy on contracts etc)

Omnia2 if you care more about multimedia (watching pics and videos on the AMOLED screen is much better honestly) and if you mind the big size of the HD2.

About Omnia2, the visibility under the sun is not good but is on par with any other WM or Android phones. Also the touchscreen is far from being lethargic, if you disable the Samsung WidgetPlus everything is speedy and not laggy.
