Benchmarking in comparison to HTC TOUCH HD and SD matters

Hi to all,

I recently bought my Omnia Pro and a 16GB class 6 SD card.

I preferred class 6 because I wanted the best performance I could achieve (I often use the phones card as a usb stick to transfer data).

Class 6 cards promise writing speeds at about 6MB/sec max (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Secure_Digital).

After the purchase and a lot of searching in internet I was curious to see if the phone can take advantage of the faster card.

Then a colleague of mine bought HTC Touch HD and I wanted to know if my device is faster than his (B7610:800MHz cpu but ~60MB free RAM, HD: 528MHz cpu but ~140MB free RAM, full comparison: http://www.ADVERT LINK REMOVED.com/htmls/compare_ad...152&area=2) after all HTC HD is very similar in hardware to HTC TOUCH PRO...

My colleague's phone had an 8GB class 2 SD card so I thought I could additionally check the two cards to both the phones to see what happens.

So the first thing to do was to find a benchmarking tool. I found SKtoolkit (free lite edition for windows smart phones that also works fine on windows mobile pro devices).

I restarted and put both devices in flight mode in order to avoid an incoming call during benchmarking. I also put Omnia Pro to high performance and selected all tests to both devices.

First the results:

Test HTC TOUCH HD OMNIA PRO

Integer 329.7 513.15

Floating 7.39 10.939

RAM Access 488 941

Draw Bitmaps 179 391

Main Storage Write speed 1743.47 3830.42

Main Storage Read speed 6722.10 11398.89

16GB Class 6 Write speed 817.89 929.50

16GB Class 6 Read speed 3073.54 1663.24

8GB Class 2 Write speed 737.84 574.74

8GB Class 2 Read speed 2943.94 1522.68

What I observed by looking the numbers is:

1. B7610 is generally much faster than HTC Touch HD but is very slow when it comes to SD card access speed.

2. Class 6 does some difference (especially to B7610) but not even near to what the card can achieve (I must make a test with the card to my PC to find if it really is a class 6 and the low speed is due to the phone).

Because of the second point I decided to take the SD card access benchmarks again (alone this time) with the 16GB class 6 card after again putting performance setting to high.

The results where surprising and made me have the SD card access benchmarks again.

Following the results:

Test 1st time 2nd time (all tests together)

Storage card Write 1135.46 1017.72 929.50

Storage card Read 3760.10 3757.80 1663.24

The only thing that I can thing that explains the differences is that somehow the performance setting was changed to "Auto" during the first time (all benchmarks) after a while (before the completion of all the tests).

Please write your opinions and results on the above matters.
